Tata Motors, the current No. 2 passenger vehicle manufacturer after Maruti Suzuki and ahead of Mahindra & Mahindra, has registered its highest monthly wholesales in October.
The company’s factories dispatched 73,338 cars and SUVs, including 16,244 EVs, to showrooms across India last month to mark 21% YoY growth (October 2025: 61,134 units). This is the second instance of Tata Motors crossing 70,000 units and beats its previous best of 70,222 units in January 2026.
October was also a standout month for both Maruti Suzuki (212,384 PVs, up 21%) and Mahindra (73,338 units, up 2%) with both OEMs achieving their highest monthly sales. Tata Motors though was ahead of Mahindra by just 556 units last month and also maintains its lead in CY2026 YTD with 649,477 units to M&M’s 615,280 units.
Tata Motors’ 10-month wholesales numbers (see below) reveal that Q1 (January-March 2026) with 198,743 units (up 36%) is the best quarter in the current year to date, ahead of both Q2 (April-June 2026: 180,166 units, up 45%) and Q3 (July-September 2026: 196,674 units, up 40%).
Q4 (October-December 2026) which opened with October’s record 73,894 units and could see a higher number in festive November, is likely to surpass 200,000 units.
Tata Motors headed for record 775,000 passenger vehicle sales in CY2026
Another number-crunching highlight from October is that with 649,477 cars and SUVs sold between January and October, Tata Motors has also crossed the 600,000 wholesales milestone for the first time in a calendar year.
The 700,000 annual milestone will be coming up this month and if one adds estimated combined sales of 140,000 PVs in November-December, then Tata Motors will not only cross the 750,000 milestone but could also nudge 800,000 units in CY2026.
Electric vehicles continue to be a key growth accelerator for the company which is the EV market leader. They have, over the past couple of years, been a key driver of Tata Motors’ PV volumes and in the first 10 months of this year accounted for 124,792 units (up 88%).
This translates into a 20% share of the 649,477 ICE and electric cars and SUVs sold as compared to 14% in the year-ago period (January-October 2025), with 66,298 EVs to 471,289 passenger vehicles.
Of its six-pack of EVs, the Nexon EV remains its biggest volume driver, while the updated Tiago EV and Punch EV are witnessing growing demand. With Tata Motos extending the Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) offering to the Nexon EV, Curvv EV, Sierra EV and Harrier EV recently, demand looks to be on the upswing.
PUNCH LEADS TATA MOTORS’ ACCELERATED DRIVE IN CY2026
While the model-wise wholesales numbers for October are yet to be known, the wholesales numbers for the first nine months of this year are a good enough trend. The six-pack of SUVs (Punch, Nexon, Sierra, Harrier, Curvv and Safari) have increased their share of Tata PV sales by seven percentage points YoY to 83% from 76% a year ago.
Between January-September 2026, these six SUVs have sold 478,153 units, up 53% YoY (January-September 2025: 311,933 SUVs). Meanwhile, the share of the two hatchbacks and one compact sedan (Tiago, Altroz, Tigor/Aeris) has reduced to 17% from 24% with sales down 1% to 97,440 units from 98,222 units in January-September 2025.
As per the estimated numbers (see data table above), the Punch compact SUV is currently the No. 1 with 182,269 units and strong 49% YoY growth which gives it a 32% share of the 575,593 PVs sold in the January-September 2026 period.
Offered with petrol, CNG and EV engines, the Punch has gone ahead of sibling Nexon (174,524 units, up 28%) which is ranked second with a 30% share. A year ago, the Nexon was ahead of the Punch. The Sierra SUV, launched in January 2026, has sold 62,574 units and has snapped up an 11% model-wise share of Tata PV sales this year.
The Tiago hatchback takes fourth rank with 62,512 units, up 2%, and is followed by the Harrier SUV (27,915 units, up 66%). The premium Altroz, which recently crossed 350,000 sales since its January 2020 launch, is at No. 6 with 24,332 units, down 7% YoY. The Curvv notchback, with 16,070 units (down 33%) is seventh.
The premium Safari SUV (14,801 units, up 17%) is eighth and followed by the Tigor, which has been replaced by the Aeris compact sedan in September.
