Tata Motors dispatches 76,615 EVs in January-July, charges towards 150,000 milestone in CY2026

Tata Motors’ 7-month PV wholesales including highest monthly dispatches of 15,217 electric cars and SUVs in July are already 94% of its CY2025 sales of 81,125 units. With strong demand for most of its zero-emission models and the upcoming festive season, Tata EV is headed for record annual sales.

Tata Motors dispatches 76,615 EVs in January-July, charges towards 150,000 milestone in CY2026

Electric passenger vehicle (e-PV) market leader Tata Motors is pushing the envelope on the wholesales (factory dispatches) front, thereby ensuring that its showrooms are well stocked to cater to EV buyer demand. As per data released by the company, its total e-PV wholesales in the first 7 months of CY2026 are 76,715 units, up 95% YoY (January-July 2025: 32,291 units). This includes a monthly wholesale high of 15,217 electric cars and SUVs last month.

This wholesales performance is in tandem with its retail sales (deliveries to customers) of 71,589 zero-emission cars and SUVs in January-July 2026 including a monthly high of 13,728 units in July.

As the seven-month e-PV wholesales data table (shown below) depicts, the company has accelerated its EV dispatches since May 2026 to meet the surge in demand, following the hikes in petrol and diesel as well as CNG prices in mid-May. In fact, May (10,517 units) was the first month when Tata EV wholesales crossed the 10,000-unit mark. Sales have risen month on month (MoM) since then: June (14,800 units, up 41% MoM) and July (15,217 units, up 3% MoM).

Tata Motors’ e-PV dispatches crossed the 10,000-units mark for the first time in May 2026 and have risen month on month since then, hitting a new high of 15,217 units in July.

Amongst the mainstream PV manufacturers in India, Tata Motors continues to have the largest EV portfolio. It has seven models comprising the Tiago EV, Nexon EV, Punch EV, Harrier EV, Curvv EV, Tigor EV/Xpres-T (for fleet buyers), and the just-launched Sierra EV. Second-ranked e-PV OEM Mahindra & Mahindra currently has four models: BE 6, XEV 9e, XEV 9S and the XUV400.

A flurry of new model launches has energised sales for Tata Motors this year. While the Nexon EV continues to be its volume driver, the updated MY2026 Tiago EV (launched in end-May at Rs 699,000) and the new Punch EV (launched in February 2026) have drawn a large percentage of first-time EV buyers. The new Tiago EV – India’s most affordable e-PV – is understood to be drawing new buyers transiting from ICE hatchbacks, particularly in the wake of the petrol-diesel price hikes in May this year. And the Sierra EV, launched on June 30, has given even more ammo to Tata’s e-SUV portfolio.

From January, when 9,052 EVs accounted for 13% of Tata Motors’ record PV sales of 70,222 units, both June (14,800 EVs) and July (15,217 EVs) have registered an EV penetration level of 24 percent.

Every fourth Tata PV sold in June-July was an EV

As a result of the surging demand for its e-PVs, Tata Motors is registering higher levels of EV penetration month on month. As the CY2026 YTD wholesales data table above indicates, from January, when 9,052 EVs accounted for 13% of Tata Motors’ record monthly PV sales of 70,222 units, both June (14,800 EVs / 62,076 PVs) and July (15,217 EVs / 63,760 PVs) have registered an EV penetration level of 24 percent. This essentially means every fourth Tata passenger vehicle sold in June-July was an electric model.

The strong growth in its EV sales is also helping Tata Motors stay ahead of an aggressive Mahindra & Mahindra. While Tata Motors has clocked 7-month wholesales of 442,669 units (up 43% YoY), M&M’s factory dispatches in the January-July period are 418,593 units (up 19% YoY). Expect the ongoing battle between the No. 2 and No. 3 players in India’s passenger vehicle market to turn more intense in the coming months. What’s clear for Tata Motors and M&M is that both are headed for record sales of over 600,000 units in CY2026 . . . Tata Motors, which posted record PV wholesales of 578,771 units in CY2025, for the first time and M&M, which sold 625,603 SUVs in CY2025, for the second time
