Even as the buzz grows about India’s passenger vehicle (PV) industry driving towards a record 5 million wholesales in FY2027, this 50-lakh vehicles milestone will be met three months sooner when CY2026 closes on December 31 this year. In the first 8 months of CY2026, PV manufacturers have registered estimated wholesales of 3.47 million units in the domestic market. This is a 23% YoY increase (January-August 2025: 2.82 million PVs) with market leader Maruti Suzuki’s share being 1.4 million units and a 40% share.
With four months left to go in the current calendar year, India PV Inc is 1.53 million units away from hitting 5 million domestic wholesales. Having averaged monthly sales of 434,000 units in the year to date, and the festive season all set to bring fresh cheer to OEMs, it can be expected the September-December period will deliver an additional 1.73 million units or more. This will take total PV sales in CY2026 to an estimated 5.20 million units and mark handsome 16% YoY growth (CY2025: 4.48 million PVs).
Passenger vehicle as well as utility vehicle market leader Maruti Suzuki India, which has averaged monthly wholesales of 175,000 units in January-August 2026 including an all-time high of 196,203 PVs in July, can be expected to dispatch between 650,000 to 700,000 cars, SUVs and MPVs between September and December. This will take annual domestic market sales for the company, currently at 1.40 million units, to beyond 2 million units for the first time in a calendar year in CY2026.
Maruti Suzuki's Model-wise Sales Mix: Hatchbacks, UVs and Eeco
GST 2.0-driven Revival in Small Car Demand Adds Verve to Utility Vehicle Sales
Maruti Suzuki’s stellar showing this year is the result of the revival in small car sales, driven by the sharp price reduction enabled by GST 2.0 from September 2025 which have brought this category out of a prolonged slowdown. This is reflected in the 46% YoY increase in sales of Maruti’s two entry-level budget hatchbacks in Cy2026 YTD – Alto (85,973 units, up 51%) and S-Presso (15,464 units, up 24%). This gives these two mini-cars a 7% share of the 1.40 million PVs compared to 6% from the 1.14 million PVs in January-August 2025.
The other six models in Maruti Suzuki’s hatchback and sedan portfolio add another 604,830 units, up 14% YoY (January-August 2025: 529,144 units). They are led by the Dzire sedan (168,413 units, up 25%) and followed by the Wagon R (144,122 units, up 10%), Swift (139,117 units, up 16%), Baleno (130,983 units, up 23%), Celerio (17,195 units, up 3%) and Ignis (5,000 units, down 71%). Cumulative hatchback and sedan sales at 706,267 units are up 18% YoY (January-August 2025: 598,469 units) and give them a 50% share of the company’s 1.40 million PVs sold.
Eeco Van and Utility Vehicles Drive Growth Beyond Hatchbacks
The van segment, represented by the Eeco, has clocked eight-month wholesales of 97,281 units, up 9% YoY, for a 7% share of the company’s total PV sales.
Meanwhile, utility vehicles (UVs) continue to provide the firepower to the company’s sales. Total UV wholesales at 596,502 units are up 30% YoY (January-August 2025: 459,907 units) and give this category a 43% share of Maruti Suzuki’s 1.40 million PVs versus 40% in a year-ago period. Of the nine models, factory dispatches of three models – Brezza, Grand Vitara and Invicto – are down year on year. The Ertiga, India’s best-selling MPV, is the company’s No. 1 UV with 147,889 units and 16% growth. It is followed by the Fronx (133,644 units, up 18%), Brezza (116,310 units, down 4%), Victoris (98,224 units), Grand Vitara (53,174 units, down 22%), XL6 (28,550 units, up 18%), e-Vitara (12,361 units), Jimny (4,456 units, up 37%) and the Invicto MPV (1,894 units, down 24%). The 596,502 UVs sold in the past eight months are 81% of the 732,468 UVs the company sold in CY2025. Will Maruti Suzuki breach the 900,000 UV sales mark in CY2026?
Nexa Channel Sales Cross 3.65 Lakh Units in Eight Months
Maruti Suzuki’s premium Nexa channel, which retails seven models –Baleno, Fronx, Grand Vitara, XL6, e-Vitara, Jimny and Invicto – has sold 365,062 units in the first eight months of CY2026, up 15% YoY (January-August 2025: 318,071 units). Having crossed the half-a-million sales for the first time in CY2025 (501,443 units), Nexa which now has the e-Vitara in its portfolio and has just launched the new Baleno, should surpass the 500,000 wholesales again this calendar year.
