INDIA SALES: Top 10 Scooters in July 2016
Honda Navi debuts, Honda Dio remains third bestselling scooter as Hero Maestro inches closer, TVS Jupiter, Yamaha Fascino and Ray stabilise, Hero Pleasure climbs on the back of increased sales.
India’s scooter market continues to surprise with its ever-growing numbers. Honda’s Activa remains the country’s bestselling two-wheeler brand (beating the Hero Splendor yet another time) for the consecutive seventh month in July 2016. The Honda Activa sold 256,173 units in July 2016, growing by 13.50 percent year-on-year, compared to 225,704 units in July 2015.
The 110cc TVS Jupiter – the immediate rival to the Honda Activa – is the second bestselling scooter with sales of 46,557 units in July 2016. The model recorded a slow and steady YoY growth of 6.74 percent.
Popular among young urban riders and collegians, the 110cc Honda Dio continues to hold onto its third position with sales of 32,388 units last month. The stylish Dio has grown by an impressive 42 percent YoY, which only indicates its growing affinity and connect across the domestic markets. It is to be noted that the Honda Dio, which was at No. 7 position in May 2016, climbed up to the third slot in June and July 2016 due to new school and college admissions across India. The easy-to-ride-and-maintain model undoubtedly continues to command a good impression amongst India’s youngsters.
Hero MotoCorp consolidates
Continuing to consolidate its position in the market through the Maestro, which is at No 4, Hero MotoCorp recorded sales of 32,311 units of its popular 110cc model in July 2016. While Hero Maestro sales stood just 77 units behind that of Honda Dio’s, it notched YoY growth of 17.90 percent. India’s largest two-wheeler maker also held the fifth spot with its Duet model, which sold 24,391 units last month.
Yamaha’s bestselling scooter, the 113cc Fascino garnered sales of 18,162 units in July 2016, up by a staggering 71.44 percent YoY. The model, which has driven Yamaha as a mainstream scooter manufacturer competing with the likes of Honda, Hero MotoCorp and TVS Motor Company, takes No. 6 spot. In July 2015, the Fascino, which was a newly launched scooter at the time, rode into eighth spot in the list after gaining instant popularity.
Hero’s 102cc Pleasure also registers a spike in its July 2016 sales, thanks to the beginning of new college sessions. The model sold 15,738 units last month as against 12,226 units sold in July 2016. The Hero Pleasure, however, has declined in volumes on a YoY basis. The model has recorded a drop of 11.31 percent over its July 2015 sales of 17,745 units. It currently holds No 7 rank in the top selling scooters list of July 2016.
Yamaha’s Ray siblings stood at the eighth spot with sales of 14,080 units last month. The sales of the Ray models have grown by 40.74 percent YoY, having sold 10,004 units in July last year, when it was at ninth position.
Suzuki’s Access model occupies ninth place on the Top 10 list for July 2016. The company sold 13,120 units last month, down by a substantial 35.38 percent YoY compared to July 2015’s 20,304 units, when it had held the fifth bestselling scooter spot.
Honda Navi rides into the Top 10
The surprise for July 2016 is the Honda Navi, which has opened up an all-new two wheeler segment of a scooter-motorcycle hybrid. The company has sold 11,644 units of the Navi variants in July 2016, making it the 10th bestselling model in the market. The Honda Navi, which is powered by the proven 110cc scooter engine that powers the Activa, Dio and Aviator models, was unveiled at the Auto Expo in February earlier this year. Although the Navi variants are finding takers at a slow and steady pace, it has outsold the Aviator and has entered into the top 10 bestselling scooters list in July 2016 for the first time.
While it would be interesting to see how the Honda’s Navi models fare during the upcoming festive season, industry experts estimate that the Aprilia SR150, which has also started reaching the retail stores, will make a respectable mark in the scooter market in the coming months.
