Hyundai Motor India share of global sales rises to new high of 16% in January-July

A revival of demand for Hyundai Motor India sees its seven-month sales rise 9% to 360,162 units, giving it a 16% share of Hyundai’s global sales of 2.26 million units and reinforces India’s strong position as a key global growth market for the Korean automaker.

Hyundai Motor India share of global sales rises to new high of 16% in January-July

Hyundai Motor India ltd (HMIL), which is witnessing a revival of demand, has scaled a new high in terms of its contribution to its parent, Hyundai Motor Co. As per the wholesales numbers for the first seven months of this year, the Indian arm of the Korean auto major sold 360,162 units between January-July 2026, marking a 9% YoY increase (January-July 2025: 329,783 units). This performance marks a return to growth for the company in CY2026 YTD after CY2025 (571,878 units) when it registered a 5% YoY decline.

As a result of the YoY growth in the current calendar year, India – the jewel in Hyundai’s crown – continues to be a key contributor to the Hyundai Motor Group. As a result, HMIL’s share of Hyundai Motor’s global sales has risen to 16%, accounting for 360,162 units of the estimated 2.26 million ICE, EV and hybrid vehicles (down 6% YoY) Hyundai Motor Co has sold worldwide in the past seven months.

A deep dive into Hyundai’s global and its India market sales reveals that barring CY2025, Hyundai Motor India’s share of Hyundai’s global sales has steadily increased over the years – from 12% in CY2018 to 14% in CY2022, 15% in CY2024 when it clocked its highest annual sales of 605,429 units. In CY2025 (571,878 units, down 5.54% YoY), the India share of global sales fell to 13.81 percent. Now, with the return of demand, Hyundai India’s share of global sales is at its highest level of 15.88% in the January-July 2026 period (see the data table below).

With a revival of demand after a 5% decline in CY2025, Hyundai Motor India’s share of Hyundai Motor Co’s global sales is currently at its highest level of 15.88% in the January-July 2026 period.

HMIL with 360,162 units is currently ranked fourth amongst the PV OEMs after Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra.

SUV SHARE OF HYUNDAI INDIA PASSENGER VEHICLE SALES AT 67%

As it is for the leading PV manufacturers in India, SUVs continue to provide the bulk of the sales for Hyundai Motor India which currently retails 10 models in India — two hatchbacks (Grand i10 Nios, i20), two sedans (Aura, Verna) and six SUVs (Creta / Creta Electric, Venue, Alcazar, Exter and the all-electric Ioniq 5). The top three highest-selling models are SUVs: Creta, Venue and Exter.

Venue, Exter Growth Offsets Creta, Alcazar and Ioniq 5 Decline

Between January-July 2026, the company has sold 241,133 SUVs (up 6%, Jan-July 2025: 228,268 UVs), which makes for a 67% share of its total passenger vehicle sales of 360,162 units. This, however, is down two percentage basis points from the 69% UV share in the year-ago period, mainly because of the 7% decline in Creta dispatches to 109,479 units – 7,979 fewer units YoY (Jan-July 2025: 117,458 Cretas). This sees the share of the Creta, Hyundai’s best-selling model, fall to 30% from 36% a year ago in the company’s overall PV wholesales. This can be put down to the fire incident in June at one of HMIL’s supplier facilities, which temporarily impacted vehicle production. As a result, factory dispatches in June 2026 (39,635 units) were down 10% YoY. Production of the Creta took a hit – the 7,751 units produced were down 58% YoY (June 2025: 18,278 Cretas produced). As a result, dispatches to showrooms were down 55% YoY to 7,168 units.

The Creta continues to be the HMIL’s mainstay and accounted for a 30% share of its PV sales. Dispatches of the midsize SUV were impacted in June due to a fire incident at a Hyundai supplier.

The Venue compact SUV is the second best-selling model with 80,059 units, up 29% YoY, with its share of Hyundai PV sales rising to 22% from 19% a year ago. The Exter compact SUV has also done well (45,954 units, up 16% YoY). While the premium Alcazar midsize SUV is ranked No. 8 in Hyundai India’s model line-up with 5,592 units, down 34% YoY, the all-electric Ioniq 5 sold only 49 units in the past seven months, down 57% YoY.

Hyundai’s passenger cars comprising the i10, i20, Aura and Verna sold 119,029 units, marking 17% YoY growth (Jan-July 2025: 101,514 units), which sees their share rise to 33% from 31% a year ago. The Aura compact sedan (42,832 units, up 23% YoY), i20 Elite (35,819 units, up 30% YoY) and the Grand i10 hatchbacks (34,583 units, up 10%) have been the growth drivers while the Verna sedan (5,795 units, down 34% YoY) saw its numbers decline.

Hyundai Ranks Fourth Among Indian PV Makers in 2026

HMIL, which was the longstanding No. 2 PV OEM after Maruti Suzuki, is currently ranked fourth in CY2026 YTD (360,162 PVs, up 9% YoY) after Tata Motors (442,669 PVs, up 43% YoY) and Mahindra & Mahindra (419,593 SUVs, up 19% YoY).

Hyundai Motor Co has targeted global sales of 4.16 million passenger vehicles in CY2026. This comprises Korea market sales of 700,000 units and overseas sales of 3.46 million vehicles. Clearly, the focus will be even more on its Indian operations to deliver better than in previous years.

Pune Plant Expansion to Fuel Hyundai's 2026 Global Push

Hyundai has entered the second half in India with clear momentum, supported by the ramp-up of production at the new Pune plant which has helped expand overall manufacturing capacity. India remains central to Hyundai's global growth, both as a high-potential market and as a strategic export hub.

Will Hyundai India Break Its 2024 Sales Record?

HMIL needs to sell another 245,268 PVs in the remaining five months of CY2026 if it is to surpass its record annual wholesales of 605,429 units in CY2024. That calls for average monthly dispatches of 49,053 units starting August through to December. Will it or won’t it?
