EXCLUSIVE: Bajaj Chetak becomes third Indian electric scooter OEM to cross 10 lakh sales
Bajaj Auto’s zero-emission scooter launched in January 2020 has surpassed a million retail sales in the domestic market. The Chetak has delivered its best performance this year, surpassing the 400,000 annual milestone for the first time to boost its share to 22% of the 1.83 million e-2Ws sold in India.
Bajaj Auto has become the third Indian electric two-wheeler manufacturer, after Ola Electric and TVS Motor Co to achieve the one-million (10 lakh) retail sales milestone in India. Since launch in January 2020, the Pune-based manufacturer of the Chetak e-scooter has delivered 10,01,135 units to its customers in the domestic market (see data table below). This is as per the cumulative retail sales numbers on the Vahan portal (November 6, 2026).
Surging demand for the Chetak this year has meant that the Bajaj e-scooter surpassed both the 300,000 and 400,000 sales milestones for the first time and could even nudge 500,000 in CY2026.
While the Bajaj Chetak’s sales in the initial years were tepid mainly as a result of a nascent market and the company’s small EV-specific sales network, demand for the Chetak rose strongly in CY2024 when 201,167 units were delivered to customers, up 168% YoY (CY2023: 75,112 units), giving Bajaj Auto the No. 3 rank after Ola Electric (277,610 units) and TVS Motor Co (177,024 units).
CY2025 saw the Chetak’s numbers rise 39% YoY to 279,691 units, which made Bajaj Auto the No. 2 e-2W OEM for the first time, behind market leader TVS (315,087 units) and ahead of Ather Energy (214,985 units).
CY2026 though is proving to be a stellar year for the Chetak which, along with rival products like the TVS iQube and the Ather Rizta, is powering the Indian e-2W industry to a record 2 million-plus sales this year.
In CY202 YTD, the Bajaj Chetak has sold 412,409 units, up 73% YoY and has surpassed both the 300,000 and 400,000 annual retail milestones for the first time. It could even nudge the half-a-million (500,000) mark when December and the year comes to a close.
FIVE-FOLD GROWTH IN CHETAK MARKET SHARE IN FIVE YEARS
The rapid rise in the Chetak’s sales is reflected in its growing e-2W market share. In CY2022, the Chetak (26,758 units) had a 4% share of all-India e-2W sales of 661,636 units. Bajaj Auto’s e-2W and the Chetak’s market share entered double-digits for the first time in CY2024 when the e-scooter accounted for 17% of all-India e-2w sales, and increased that to 21% in CY2025.
In the first 10 months and six days of November this year, with 412,409 units (January 1-November 6), it has a 22% market share of the 1.83 million e-2Ws sold in India. This is the highest level and only below market leader TVS Motor Co’s 26% e-2W market share.
The Chetak’s rapid growth throughout CY2026 is reflected in the quarterly performance. Q1 (January-March 2026: 100,615 units) marked a 24% YoY increase (Q1 CY2025: 80,961 units).
While Q2 (April-June 2026: 117,679 units, up 77% YoY) was a 17% increase over Q1, Q3 (July-September 2026) was even better with 136,040 units, up 156% YoY, and 16% better than Q2.
Q4 (October-December 2026), which has opened with a record 49,170 units in October – Bajaj’s highest monthly retail sales to date –and festive November underway, could turn out to be the best quarter in the history of zero-emission Chetak.
In the current calendar year to date, with 412,409 units sold, Bajaj Auto is 69,295 units behind e-2W market leader TVS Motor Co (481,704 units) but ahead of No. 3 OEM Ather Energy (299,778 units), Hero Vida (207,583 units), Ola Electric (121,061 units) and Greaves Electric Mobility (84,245 units).
These top six OEMs’ combined sales of 1.60 million units account for 88% of the 18,32,799 e-2Ws sold between January 1 to November 6 this year in the domestic market.
With 55 days left for CY2026 to come to a close, Bajaj Auto needs to sell an additional 87,591 units to achieve the 500,000 or half-a-million milestone this year. Diwali-festooned November could see Bajaj Auto reap a bumper harvest of Chetak sales, maybe even over 50,000 units for the first time in a month.
