Tata Motors Launches Altroz with AMT Option and Multi-Powertrain Lineup

Tata Motors launched the Altroz premium hatchback, introducing the model's first AMT automatic transmission option alongside existing DCA and manual variants. The company positioned the refreshed vehicle as a comprehensive offering in India's premium hatchback segment with petrol, diesel and CNG powertrain options.

According to the company, this launch represents its strategy to strengthen its position in the premium hatchback category, where it reports selling over one million units in the past three years. The Altroz maintains the original model's five-star Global NCAP safety rating while incorporating design updates and technology enhancements.

Pricing Structure

The updated Altroz carries an introductory starting price of INR 6.89 lakhs for the base Smart variant with the 1.2-liter petrol engine. The pricing structure extends across four trim levels, with the petrol variants ranging from INR 6.89 lakhs to INR 9.99 lakhs for the top-end Accomplished S variant. The CNG variants command a premium of approximately INR 1 lakh over their petrol counterparts, starting at INR 7.89 lakhs and reaching INR 11.09 lakhs for the highest specification. The diesel engine option, available exclusively in Smart and Accomplished variants, starts at INR 8.99 lakhs and extends to INR 11.29 lakhs. The company has positioned the DCA automatic transmission as a premium offering available in the higher Accomplished and Accomplished S variants, while the new AMT option targets the Pure and Creative trim levels to provide automatic convenience at more accessible price points.

Design and Feature Updates

The updated variant incorporates flush door handles and connected LED tail lamps as segment-first features. The exterior design includes LED headlamps with integrated daytime running lights and a revised front grille. Interior modifications feature executive-style rear seating with enhanced thigh support and ambient lighting throughout the cabin.

Technology additions include a 10.25-inch infotainment system paired with a digital instrument cluster of matching size. The vehicle offers 360-degree surround view camera, wireless charging capabilities, dual 65-watt Type-C charging ports, and voice-controlled electric sunroof functionality.

Powertrain and Transmission Options

The updated variant provides three powertrain choices: a 1.2-liter petrol engine, a 1.2-liter CNG variant with twin-cylinder technology, and a 1.5-liter diesel engine. Transmission options include five-speed manual, six-speed DCA automatic, and the newly introduced five-speed AMT automatic.

The diesel variant positions the Altroz as the segment's exclusive diesel-powered premium hatchback. The CNG option utilizes Tata Motors' twin-cylinder technology, which the company states preserves boot space while maintaining premium features.

Safety and Architecture

Built on Tata Motors' ALFA architecture, the updated Altroz includes six airbags and electronic stability program as standard equipment. Additional safety features comprise hill hold assist, ISOFIX mounting points, and SOS calling functionality. The vehicle maintains structural reinforcements through what the company terms its Diamond Strength Safety Shield design.

Market Positioning and Availability

The updated variant launches in five color options paired with distinct trim levels designated as Smart, Pure, Creative, Accomplished S, and Accomplished+ S. The company has structured its offerings to provide sunroof options in the Pure and Creative personas, while AMT availability remains limited to these same trim levels.

According to Shailesh Chandra, Managing Director of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicle Ltd. and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility Ltd., "Our journey in the last 5 years has been defined by fast-paced growth and transformation. As we look ahead, FY26 is not about incremental gains — it's about a quantum leap. With 1 million+ premium hatches sold in the last 3 years, we believe hatchbacks remain a critical part of India's mobility landscape.

"Today, we are proud to introduce a bold new chapter in premium hatchbacks with the re-imagination of the Altroz. The 2025 edition makes the Altroz shine brighter by seamlessly blending contemporary design, advanced technology, and a performance-led approach. It embodies everything today's Premium Hatch Customer seeks — modern styling, a premium feel, tech-rich features, next-level safety, and the widest range of powertrain options. Every element has been thoughtfully crafted to holistically elevate the driving experience. The updated Altroz will make its owners truly 'Feel Special'."

The launch reflects Tata Motors' focus on the premium hatchback segment as the company prepares for fiscal year 2026 market objectives.
