Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted India's commitment towards becoming a global leader in semiconductor production, in his Independence Day address, ANI reported.

"Semiconductors, AI and modern technologies are closely linked to our future and we have begun working on the Indian Semiconductor mission," Prime Minister Modi noted.

He also asked why each piece of Indian equipment could not have a Made in India chip, adding that India has the potential to fulfill this dream, and hence production and semiconductor-related work will take place in India, ANI reported.

"India has started working on its Semiconductor Mission. We are moving ahead rapidly with 5G and towards further boosting our production capacity. I assure you we won't stop here," the Prime Minister said.

Earlier in March, the PM laid the foundation stone for three new semiconductor plants: two in Gujarat and one in Assam, of which the Tata Group will establish two out of these three plants.

The semiconductor units will be based in Dholera, Sanand and Morigaon.

ANI further noted that on Wednesday, PM Modi met the chairman of Hon Hai Technology Group (Foxconn), Young Liu, to talk about the opportunities the country offers in futuristic sectors, ANI noted.

The Foxconn chairman explored the company's investment plans in TN, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Last year, Foxconn announced plans to double workforce and investment in the country, including a Rs 5,000 crore investment in Karnataka, via two projects, ANI noted.
