Mercedes-Benz Unveils Comprehensively Updated S-Class with Illuminated Star and AI-Powered Features

Mercedes-Benz has revealed the new S-Class, marking the most extensive update within a single generation of its flagship luxury saloon. Released to commemorate 140 years since Carl Benz invented the automobile in 1886, the updated model features more than 2,700 newly developed or re-engineered components.

The exterior introduces several striking changes, including a 20% larger illuminated grille and, for the first time, an optionally illuminated Mercedes star on the bonnet. New twin-star DIGITAL LIGHT headlamps with micro-LED technology deliver approximately 40% more illumination whilst reducing energy consumption. The rear features redesigned taillights with three chrome-framed signature stars.

At the heart of the new S-Class is the Mercedes-Benz Operating System (MB.OS), a purpose-built supercomputer that powers all vehicle domains and enables over-the-air updates. The system supports the fourth generation of MBUX, featuring an AI-based virtual assistant powered by ChatGPT-4o and Google Gemini, offering natural dialogue and short-term memory capabilities.

The standard MBUX Superscreen combines a 14.4-inch central display and 12.3-inch passenger display beneath continuous glass. For rear passengers, the MBUX High-End Rear Seat Entertainment system now includes larger 13.1-inch displays with integrated HD cameras, enabling video conferencing with Microsoft Teams, Zoom, or Webex whilst travelling.

Driver assistance receives significant upgrades through the MB.DRIVE suite, utilizing ten external cameras, five radar sensors, and twelve ultrasonic sensors. MB.DRIVE ASSIST PRO enables point-to-point driving in dense urban traffic, available initially in China and later in the US, with other markets following pending regulatory approval.

Interior refinements include a redesigned instrument panel, new centre console with wireless charging for two devices, and illuminated cup holders. Innovation extends to comfort features such as heated seat belts warming to 44°C, Digital Vent Control with automatic air vent adjustment, and a new electric air filter that purifies cabin air approximately every 90 seconds.

The powertrain range includes updated V8 and six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, plus plug-in hybrid options. The new eight-cylinder M 177 Evo engine delivers 395 kW (537 hp) and 750 Nm of torque, whilst plug-in hybrid variants offer an electric range of around 100 kilometres.

Suspension options include standard AIRMATIC air suspension or optional E-ACTIVE BODY CONTROL, both featuring intelligent damping that adjusts electronically before long speed bumps using Car-to-X data from other Mercedes-Benz vehicles. Rear-axle steering is now standard at 4.5°, with an optional 10° configuration reducing the turning circle by almost two metres in long-wheelbase models.

The MANUFAKTUR Made to Measure programme offers unprecedented personalisation, with over 150 exterior colours and 400 interior colours available. Two new standard MANUFAKTUR shades debut: black sparkling with glass flakes and verdesilver magno in matte finish.

Safety enhancements include an adaptive restraint system with PRE-SAFE® Impulse belt pretensioners and up to 15 airbags. The S 680 GUARD 4MATIC variant achieves VR10 certification, the highest civilian protection level, powered by a 6.0-litre V12 biturbo engine.

Production begins at the Sindelfingen plant's Factory 56, with customer orders opening from 30 January 2026. The Mercedes-Benz S 350 d 4MATIC Saloon starts at €121,356.20 in Germany, with leasing available from €1,020.00 monthly for private customers.
