Mahle Considers Non-Automotive Growth with Expansion into Rail Thermal Systems

Mahle is accelerating a strategic push beyond road mobility, positioning rail transport as a key diversification engine through its consolidated Industrial and Special Solutions division.

The German automotive systems supplier said is deploying rail cooling plant manufacturing footprints to serve rolling stock applications. The move forms part of a broader group strategy to transfer core automotive thermal management, mechatronics, and power electronics IP into sectors operating outside traditional vehicle manufacturing.

Mahle's Rail Thermal Systems on Display at InnoTrans 2026

As part of this portfolio expansion, the company said it will showcase its rail thermal management systems at the InnoTrans 2026 exhibition in Berlin.

The primary technical exhibit is a roof-mounted Battery Thermal Management System (BTMS) designed specifically for electric and hybrid locomotives. The unit provides temperature control for high-performance traction batteries, aimed at maintaining thermal stability under operating loads to safeguard battery longevity and system safety.

Alongside the locomotive battery system, Mahle said it will present a compact combined cooling unit for electric multiple units (EMUs) that integrates temperature regulation for traction motors, transformers, and inverters into a single structural module.
