ARAI unveils electric vehicle charging innovation at Bharat Mobility Expo
ARAI showcased a prototype of the Over-Head Automated Charging Device (OH-ACD) and signed an MoU with FSID to advance automotive research and technology development.
The Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI) demonstrated new charging technology for electric vehicles and announced several collaborations at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in New Delhi on Friday. The organization showcased a prototype of an Over-Head Automated Charging Device (OH-ACD), developed in partnership with IIT-Madras, which can deliver 600kW charging power for electric trucks and buses.
Heavy Industries Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy presided over the event where ARAI signed a memorandum of understanding with the Foundation for Science Innovation and Development (FSID) to advance automotive research and technology development. The organization also announced dates for its flagship event, the Symposium on International Automotive Technology (SIAT-2026).
The OH-ACD system uses overhead pantograph technology to enable high-speed charging for zero-emission vehicles, operating at 1000V voltage and 600A current. ARAI officials indicated that this prototype could serve as a foundation for developing national regulatory standards following stakeholder consultation.
At its exhibition spaces across Bharat Mandapam, Yashobhoomi, and India Expo Centre & Mart, ARAI is displaying several other technologies including an ADAS Validation Platform, a Light Commercial Vehicle with E-Axle, and a Hydrogen Fuel Cell Electric Powertrain. The organization is also presenting its certification services and developmental validation capabilities for automotive components.
ARAI Director Dr. Reji Mathai emphasized the organization's expanding role in supporting sustainable mobility solutions and government initiatives. "The support from Ministry of Heavy Industries has enabled ARAI to expand its portfolio and facilities to enhance our expertise for serving the automotive industry," he said.
ARAI, established in 1966, serves as India's premier automotive testing and certification agency. The organization has been instrumental in supporting government programs such as Production Linked Incentives (PLI) and PM E-DRIVE, while also contributing to the development of safety and sustainability standards for the Indian automotive sector. Through platforms like TechNovuus and its Academy, ARAI has been working to advance knowledge sharing and skill development in the automotive industry.
