Sona Koyo develops low-cost EPA
Sona Koyo Steering Systems has developed a new low cost electronic power assist module (EPAM) for a North America- based off-highway vehicle manufacturer, leveraging its own indigenous technology. The EPA is based on a design that structurally uses fewer parts. Sona Koyo said it uses less fuel and costs about 20 percent cheaper than existing electronic power steering systems.

The product, developed over three years, has been rigorously tested and validation in different road conditions in the US. Orders are slated to kick off in October-November 2011. The product has got patents in India and America.

Surinder Kapur, chairman, Sona Group, said his company has also been approached by another American off- highway manufacturer for a similar product. Initial orders for the EPAM are slated to be worth $300,000, increasing to $1 million to $2 million in the second year. “It will be initially offered as an optional equipment but if it becomes a standard fitment, then the volumes will be much more,” adds Kapur.
