Auto Expo 2014: Terra Motors showcases A4000i electric scooter, unveils electric 3- wheeler

Last month Autocar Professional broke the news about Japanese electric vehicle manufacturer, Terra Motors planning to showcase its electric scooter A4000i at the Auto Expo. Shortly after unveiling the Kiwami superbike, the company has unveiled its popular executive electric scooter, the A4000i and an electric three-wheeler named T4 at the Expo.

Talking to Autocar Professional on the sidelines of the Expo at India Expo Mart, Greater Noida, Toru Tokushige, CEO and founder, Terra Motors, said, “India is a very important market for us and we are committed to deliver quality products to our customers in India. We plan to invest Rs 300 million in India during the next fiscal and we expect to sell nearly 10,000 units of our electric two-wheelers in this region.”

The company plans to commercially bring the A4000i to India later this year and is currently working to set up its first dealership in Gurgaon, which it plans in the next 4-5 months.

Terra Motors also operates out of other Asian markets such as Vietnam and Philippines and sells the A4000i scooter there. The model, released last year (July 2013) in Tokyo, is termed as the world’s first mass production model to be connected to a smartphone (iPhone series currently). The feature enables the rider to store details such as electricity consumption, battery life, riding data and others to cloud database.

The A4000i uses a rear in-wheel motor which is powered by Terra Motors’ own lithium ion battery pack (48V/40AH) which, according to company data, lasts for 50,000km (lifetime range). Terra Motors aims at selling this model primarily in South-Asian markets (including Japan) and, according to a company release, is targeting sales of 100,000 units by end-2015.

The T4 is powered by a 3.5Kw motor which draws charge from 48V, 120Ah battery. The company offers an option of lead acid as well as lithium ion battery options in the electric three- wheeler T4. The estimated range, according to the company data, is 80kms with a total capacity to carry 3-5 passengers excluding the driver. The T4 is expected to be sold in India later this year.
