ZF India Signs Partnership Deal for Transmission Supply to Commercial Vehicle Manufacturer
German technology company secures contract to supply thousands of manual and automatic transmissions for heavy trucks from its Pune facility.
ZF India has entered into a partnership agreement with an Indian commercial vehicle manufacturer to supply several thousand manual and automatic transmissions for trucks in the heavy-duty segment. The deal, signed in March 2025, covers the supply of 9-speed transmissions designed for vehicles with over 300 horsepower.
The partnership involves ZF's EcoMid manual transmissions and EcoTronic Mid automatic transmissions, both engineered for trucks weighing over 25 tonnes and operating in the 1300Nm torque segment. The transmissions will be manufactured at ZF's existing facility in Chakan, Pune, supporting the government's "Make in India" initiative.
ZF has positioned itself in India's high-torque transmission market by offering 9-speed units capable of handling 1500 Nm and 12-speed transmissions rated for 3200 Nm. The EcoMid transmission system is designed for commercial vehicles with gross vehicle weights up to 55 tonnes and features both direct drive and overdrive configurations.
The company states that the technology reduces driver fatigue while improving fuel efficiency and extending clutch life. The transmissions are part of ZF's modular platform approach to commercial vehicle solutions.
Akash Passey, President of ZF Group in India, noted the company's six-decade presence in the Indian market and its focus on operational efficiency solutions. P Kaniappan, Senior Vice President at ZF Group, emphasized the transmissions' role in supporting the commercial vehicle industry's shift toward higher efficiency in heavy-duty applications.
ZF Group operates as a global technology supplier serving passenger cars, commercial vehicles, and industrial applications. The company reported sales of €41.4 billion in fiscal 2024 and employs approximately 161,600 people worldwide across 161 production locations in 30 countries. In India, ZF provides solutions spanning autonomous, connected, and electric vehicle technologies for the commercial vehicle sector.
