Yamaha Cygnus XR155 Scooter revealed

Yamaha has expanded its popular Cygnus scooter line-up with the introduction of the all-new Cygnus XR155 in Taiwan. This marks the first time the Cygnus series has moved beyond the 125cc segment, with the more powerful XR155 debuting alongside the refreshed 125cc Cygnus X at a launch event earlier this month. Both models sport a fully redesigned exterior while retaining the flat-floor design that has long been a Cygnus hallmark.

At the heart of the XR155 is the familiar 155cc, liquid-cooled, single-cylinder engine with Variable Valve Actuation (VVA), the same unit that powers the Aerox 155. While Yamaha Taiwan has yet to release official performance figures, the Aerox version of this motor produces 15hp at 8,000rpm and 13.9Nm at 6,500rpm, so similar numbers can be expected here.

Design-wise, the XR155 takes a step closer to Yamaha’s larger XMAX scooters with a sculpted front apron and distinctive triple-lens LED headlight setup. Adding a touch of sophistication, the headlight also features variable colour temperature, switching automatically between white and warm white based on ambient conditions.

Unlike the Aerox 155’s step-through format, the XR155 gets a flat floorboard and rides on 12-inch wheels at both ends. This practical layout makes it more user-friendly for daily commuting and better aligned with rivals like the TVS Ntorq 150. For markets like India, where flat-floor scooters dominate, this format could offer the XR155 broader appeal than the Aerox, which has positioned itself as a niche, sporty offering.

Currently, the Yamaha Cygnus XR155 is exclusive to Taiwan, and the company has not confirmed plans for international rollout. However, if introduced in India, the XR155 would neatly slot between the RayZR 125 and Aerox 155 in Yamaha’s scooter portfolio, while directly competing with the TVS Ntorq 150.
