Xiaomi EV Opens First European R&D Center in Munich
Chinese tech giant establishes automotive research and design facility in Germany's automotive hub, marking significant step toward planned European market entry in 2027.
Xiaomi Corporation announced the opening of its first European Research and Development and Design Center for electric vehicles in Munich, Germany, representing a major milestone in the company's global automotive expansion strategy.
The Munich facility marks Xiaomi EV's first R&D center outside its domestic Chinese market and positions the company strategically in one of Europe's premier automotive engineering hubs. The center will focus on performance vehicle projects, electric vehicle technology development, design innovation, and advanced research initiatives.
The establishment aligns with Xiaomi's "Human x Car x Home" smart ecosystem strategy, which aims to integrate personal devices, smart home products, and vehicles into a comprehensive connected experience. The Munich location will leverage local automotive expertise while supporting the company's broader goal of becoming a global leader in smart mobility.
Xiaomi EV plans to staff the center with engineers, designers, and researchers who will collaborate with the company's global teams. The facility will also pursue partnerships with research institutions and industry players to accelerate smart mobility solutions and ecosystem integration.
The expansion follows successful launches of Xiaomi's electric vehicle models in mainland China, including the SU7, SU7 Ultra, and YU7. The Munich center serves as preparation for Xiaomi EV's planned entry into the European market in 2027.
Munich's selection as the location reflects the city's status as a leading center for automotive innovation and engineering talent. The facility will focus on developing vehicles that meet global safety and quality standards while advancing intelligent driving capabilities and vehicle dynamics.
Xiaomi Corporation, founded in 2010 and listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange, has grown into one of the world's leading smartphone companies with approximately 731.2 million monthly active users globally as of June 2025. The company has also built a significant consumer IoT platform connecting nearly 989.1 million smart devices.
The automotive venture represents Xiaomi's evolution beyond consumer electronics into the mobility sector, building on its established expertise in connected devices and smart manufacturing. The company ranks 297th on the Fortune Global 500 list and maintains a presence in over 100 countries and regions worldwide.
