Why India Made the First Cut for Volvo's Biggest Engine Renewal in a Decade
The Swedish truck maker will bring its all-new D13 diesel and G13 gas engines to India alongside Europe, Morocco and Turkey.
When Volvo Trucks began mapping the global rollout of its first all-new heavy-duty engine platform in more than a decade, the order of markets it settled on contained a quiet surprise: India sits in the first wave, alongside Europe, Morocco and Turkey. The production of the new engines is expected to begin in January 2027 at Volvo's engine plant in Skövde (pronounced SKOV-deh), Sweden.
In comparison, North America, the company's second-largest market, follows a different track. Instead of choosing an all-new platform, the trucking giant has instead chose to build on the 13-litre platform and aftertreatment technology that has been in commercial use for more than a decade.
The company describes the new engine as building on the existing c platform; its most-produced engine globally with refined aftertreatment developed through more than a decade of commercial use.
As per the company officials, Volvo currently sells four 13- and 11-liter engine variants in Europe; a gas-fueled G13 and three diesels with differing turbocharging and emissions hardware.
The new platform replaces all of them with just two engines, a diesel D13 and gas G13, sharing one architecture: the same cylinder dimensions, the same 12.8-liter displacement, and the same variable-geometry turbocharger, a device whose internal vanes adjust to keep the engine responsive across a wider range of operating speeds. The smaller 11-liter diesel disappears from the lineup.
"One engine does it all," Peter Franzen, Product Manager (Powertrain) at Volvo Trucks, who presented the engines, told during a media briefing. The earlier turbo-compound diesel, he said, "was more narrow, optimized for long haul. But this engine covers all type of applications."
The development should be seen in the context of the fact that India's nascent alternative-fuel infrastructure is developing along two distinct tracks, according to Volvo Trucks. On the gas side, the company counts 36 operational LNG stations in India as of June 5, owned and run by some 15 participants ; a network led by private operators including Ultragas, B-LNG, Petronet and Think Gas, with state-owned oil marketers Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum and Hindustan Petroleum also active.
Ylva Dalerstedt, Segment Manager Long Haul, Volvo Trucks, Commercial Offer & Sales Support noted, "Gas is becoming a more relevant solution to reduce CO2 across a wider range of transport applications... and we also see it coming to use in more markets."
Charging infrastructure, by contrast, is described by the company as rapidly expanding and highly dynamic, with multiple private players and vetted equipment suppliers already in the market.
For its next-generation electric trucks, Volvo recommends CCS2 charging at up to 350 kW, enough to take its updated FM and FMX Electric models from 20 to 80% charge in about 65 minutes and megawatt-standard MCS charging at up to 700 kW, which its new long-range FH Electric can use to complete the same charge in roughly 50 minutes.
Lars Mårtensson, Director Environment at Volvo Trucks, explained, " "The trucks are here, our new engines are here, the infrastructure is growing, and we are here to guide our customers to make the transition easy." That breadth is precisely what makes the engine relevant to India. Volvo Trucks operates in India at the premium end of the market; mining tippers, over-dimensional cargo tractors and high-horsepower haulage where its FM and FMX models compete against Scania and, increasingly, BharatBenz's heavier offerings. A single engine family stretching from 380 hp to a new top rating of 560 hp with 2,900 Newton-meters of torque; the twisting force that determines how a loaded truck pulls on a gradient lets Volvo cover Indian duty cycles from coal overburden to tri-axle trailer haulage without importing multiple engine architectures.
However, all ratings will not be available to Indian market, the company executives noted.
The regulatory picture helps too. India's BS-VI emission norms are closely aligned with Europe's Euro VI, meaning an engine certified for Europe travels to India with comparatively little re-engineering.
When asked, if India-bound engines require separate ARAI certification timelines; the company management highlighted, "There are certain regulatory clauses which effect this. Essentially, yes, if our truck is localized and we are fully compliant with Indian regulations for this."
The new engines were designed to meet a European noise regulation taking effect in July 2027, a rule that effectively forced the redesign and to run on renewable fuels including 100 percent biodiesel on certain ratings and hydrotreated vegetable oil across the range, an attribute that maps neatly onto India's own biofuel-blending ambitions.
Furthermore, responding on whether the NNR3 noise-compliant hardware carries over unchanged, the company leadership clarified: "Not currently. Global introduction is planned for mid‑2027. Indian introduction is much later in 2028."
Volvo Trucks operates in India through VE Commercial Vehicles Ltd. (VECV), a joint venture between the Volvo Group and Eicher Motors established in July 2008, which holds exclusive distribution rights for Volvo Trucks in the country, with its manufacturing base at Hoskote, near Bengaluru.
The lineup is confined to the premium heavy-duty end of the market: FM and FMX models in 4x2, 6x4 and 8x4 configurations spanning roughly 420 hp to 500 hp, aimed at large fleet operators in high-load applications such as mining and coal transportation (FMX 460/500 8x4 tippers), road construction and infrastructure (FM 420 8x4), over-dimensional cargo haulage (FM 500 6x4 puller), and high-speed long-haul tractor work for e-commerce and just-in-time supply chains (FM 420 4x2).
Mining is the anchor: the FMX 500 8x4 platform has built a fleet of more than 3,000 trucks deployed across Indian mining operations over the past five years, and on May 26, 2026, Volvo Trucks India launched the FMX Edge, a new-generation off-road dump truck with a 31.2 cubic metre body designed for large-scale overburden transportation, at the Hoskote facility.
There is also a harder commercial logic. India's premium truck segment is small but growing, and infrastructure-led demand for high-horsepower tractors has lifted the category from a curiosity to a contested space.
India's premium truck opportunity rests on a broad and growing heavy-truck base: heavy commercial vehicle sales crossed 290,000 units in past couple of years, according to SIAM, while revised axle-load norms in force since past few years have pushed fleet operators toward trucks with larger engines and stronger drivetrains to carry heavier freight.
Government infrastructure spending is the demand engine, with large scale infrastructure related projects in addition to mining activities have upped the game for the segment.
What India will not get, for now, is local manufacturing of the engines themselves. Production is centralized at Skövde (Sweden), with trucks assembled in Sweden and Belgium; Indian trucks will draw on that supply chain.
That leaves open a familiar question in Indian premium trucking; whether volumes can ever justify localization, and an equally familiar answer from Gothenburg: not yet.
