Volvo CE Launches 65-Tonne Mining Excavator at Bauma Conexpo India 2026
Volvo Construction Equipment India unveiled the EC650 excavator in Greater Noida, expanding its mining lineup as India's infrastructure build-out continues at pace.
Volvo Construction Equipment India commercially launched the EC650, a 65-tonne class excavator, at bauma CONEXPO INDIA 2026 in Greater Noida on September 15. The machine is positioned as the company's flagship entry into the heavy mining excavator segment in India and is available for immediate delivery to mining customers, timed to coincide with the start of the buying season.
The EC650 is powered by a Volvo D13E engine rated at 435 horsepower. It is engineered for mass excavation and mining applications, featuring a heavy-duty boom and arm, a reinforced undercarriage, and advanced hydraulics designed to operate under sustained load in demanding site conditions. Volvo CE described the machine as built for durability and fuel efficiency, two criteria that equipment buyers in the Indian mining sector have increasingly prioritised as fuel costs and operational continuity become central to project economics.
Volvo CE's Equipment-as-a-Service and Lifecycle Support
In addition to direct sales, the EC650 will be available through Volvo CE's Equipment-as-a-Service programme, a financing and access model that allows customers to use equipment without an outright purchase. The company said the programme is part of a broader effort to reduce barriers to adoption of advanced equipment, particularly for mid-sized operators who may not have the capital outlay for a large machine purchase.
Volvo CE added that customer support would extend across the full equipment lifecycle. This includes connected telematics services, productivity monitoring tools, repair and maintenance agreements, and application-specific advisory services. The company said these offerings are aimed at improving machine uptime and overall site performance, which it framed as a contribution to India's broader infrastructure targets.
Volvo CE's Product Line-up at Bauma Conexpo India 2026
The company occupied two distinct zones at the exhibition — construction and mining — with separate product groupings for each. The construction zone featured the EC210, EC215 and EC220, a range of 20-tonne excavators used across road construction, urban projects, quarrying, and riverbed mining. Also on display were the DD90 compactor, the SD110 soil compactor, and the L120 Electric Wheel Loader, the latter representing the company's push into battery-electric equipment for lighter applications. The mining zone placed the EC480, EC650, and L150 loader at the centre, with the layout organised around application use cases rather than product categories alone.
Dimitrov Krishnan on India's Mining Equipment Demand
Dimitrov Krishnan, Managing Director of Volvo Construction Equipment India, said at the event that the Indian mining sector was operating at a scale and intensity it had not seen before, and that equipment would need to deliver reliable performance under the most demanding conditions while also meeting fuel efficiency and operator usability requirements. He described the EC650 as a machine built to serve as a dependable partner for mining operators across shifts.
India's mining and construction sectors have expanded significantly in recent years, driven by government-led infrastructure investment across roads, highways, ports, urban transit systems, and industrial corridors. The scale of this build-out has increased demand for heavy equipment and prompted several international manufacturers to deepen their India operations through local assembly, product adaptation, and expanded dealer networks.
Volvo CE Expands India Footprint with New Brand Campaign
Volvo CE has been among those expanding its India footprint. The company previously announced an investment in its Technology Centre in Bengaluru, which it said would handle research and development, product localisation, and innovation for both the Indian market and select global programmes. The centre is intended to give the company greater ability to tailor products and services to local operating conditions, regulatory standards, and customer expectations.
The EC650 launch at bauma CONEXPO INDIA 2026 also coincides with a new brand campaign the company has introduced in the Indian market. Titled Aaj Banayein Kal — loosely translated as "Let's Build Tomorrow, Today" — the campaign is directed at contractors, operators, and infrastructure builders across the country. Volvo CE said the campaign draws on India's infrastructure story and frames construction workers as central to the country's long-term development.
