Volkswagen Touareg to return as ID. Touareg electric SUV in 2029
VW ID. Touraeg will sit on the advanced SSP platform; will also have software support from Rivian.
Volkswagen is steadily reviving some of its most popular nameplates as all-electric models, and the Touareg is the latest to be confirmed for an EV transformation. According to reports from Automobilwoche, the brand’s long-standing flagship SUV will return as the Volkswagen ID. Touareg, joining the future lineup that will also include the recently announced ID. Polo, ID. Golf, ID. Tiguan, and ID. T-Roc SUVs.
The Touareg has been VW’s flagship SUV in Europe for nearly 25 years, spanning three generations and sharing its platform with the Porsche Cayenne. It was briefly sold also in markets such as India, but recent reports confirm that the current petrol-powered model will be phased out soon.
ID. Touareg to debut with SSP platform
Unlike the next-gen Porsche Cayenne EV which debuts this year on the PPE platform, the all-electric Touareg won’t arrive until 2029. This later timeline allows VW to skip PPE altogether and move directly to its more advanced SSP (Scalable Systems Platform) architecture.
The ID. Touareg is now set to be the first Volkswagen model to adopt SSP, a role that was initially expected to go to the ID. Roc and ID. Golf. However, both models have reportedly been delayed until 2030.
Rivian partnership for software support
The SSP platform based Touareg will also mark a significant step in VW’s software strategy. Models based on this new platform, including the upcoming Scout SUV for North America, will feature zonal architecture with software support from Rivian.
With the Touareg EV in the pipeline, Volkswagen is clearly positioning its ID electric vehicle brand lineup to span everything from compact hatchbacks to full-size luxury SUVs. Expect more details on the ID. Touareg to emerge as its 2029 debut approaches.
