Tata Technologies and WITTENSTEIN Form Partnership to Develop Software-Defined Vehicles

The two companies will integrate WITTENSTEIN's safety-certified real-time operating system into Tata Technologies' automotive software platform to help manufacturers meet ISO 26262 standards.

Tata Technologies and WITTENSTEIN Form Partnership to Develop Software-Defined Vehicles

Tata Technologies and WITTENSTEIN High Integrity Systems (WHIS) announced a strategic partnership on 2 March 2026 to accelerate the development of Software-Defined Vehicles (SDVs), a category of automobile in which software controls an increasing share of vehicle functions. The collaboration centres on integrating WHIS's embedded operating system, SAFE RTOS®, into Tata Technologies' automotive software stack.

Under the agreement, SAFE RTOS® will become a component of Tata Technologies' SDV platform. The product is designed for safety-critical applications and is built to meet ISO 26262, the international standard governing functional safety in road vehicles. The integration is intended to give automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and Tier 1 suppliers a route to deploying software-defined architectures that satisfy regulatory and industry safety requirements.

Nachiket Paranjpe, President of Automotive Sales at Tata Technologies, said the partnership would help customers "accelerate SDV adoption and deliver cutting-edge mobility experiences" by combining the two companies' respective areas of expertise.

Andrew Longhurst, Managing Director of WITTENSTEIN High Integrity Systems, said that SAFE RTOS® would allow OEMs and suppliers to "achieve the highest levels of safety and performance in their software-defined vehicle architectures."

The deal comes as the automotive sector undergoes a shift driven by electrification, connectivity, and the growing role of software in vehicle operation. The term "software-defined vehicle" refers to platforms where features — from driver assistance systems to powertrain management — are increasingly delivered and updated through software rather than dedicated hardware. This approach demands operating systems that can guarantee real-time performance and meet the safety standards required for functions where a failure could cause physical harm.

Tata Technologies, listed on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE: 544028) and National Stock Exchange (NSE: TATATECH), is a product engineering and digital services firm headquartered in Pune, India, with operations across the automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing sectors.

WITTENSTEIN High Integrity Systems is a subsidiary of the WITTENSTEIN Group and specialises in safety-critical embedded software for industries including automotive, aerospace, and industrial automation.

Neither company disclosed the financial terms of the partnership.
