Tata Motors has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Green Energy Mobility Solutions Pvt. Ltd (GEMS), the electric mobility subsidiary of Universal Bus Services (UBS), to supply 100 units of its all-electric Magna EV intercity coaches. The agreement was announced during the Passenger Vehicle Expo 2.0 held in Chennai, where Tata Motors also showcased its range of commercial passenger vehicles, including the Magna EV and the LPO 1822 model.
GEMS, established as part of UBS’s strategic shift toward sustainable transportation, focuses on deploying electric buses and associated charging infrastructure. UBS is a well-established intercity travel operator in South India, recognized for its premium services and operational reliability.
The MoU was signed in the presence of Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa, Minister for Industries, Government of Tamil Nadu, alongside representatives from the state government and the All Omni Bus Owners Association (AOBOA).
Dr. T.R.B. Rajaa noted that Tamil Nadu has been at the forefront of automotive and clean mobility initiatives. He stated that the collaboration between Tata Motors and UBS aligns with the state’s broader goals of promoting sustainable public transport and reducing emissions.
Sunil Kumar Ravindran, Managing Partner of Universal Bus Services and Director at GEMS, commented on the partnership, emphasizing the company’s confidence in Tata Motors’ technology and product reliability. He noted that the Magna EV is expected to offer improved passenger comfort, lower operating costs, and zero tailpipe emissions—factors that support UBS’s transition to electric mobility for long-distance routes.
Anand S, Vice President and Head of Commercial Passenger Vehicle Business at Tata Motors, described the MoU as a significant development in the electrification of India’s intercity transport sector. He highlighted that the Magna EV was developed based on customer feedback and extensive testing, aiming to deliver high performance, safety, and efficiency.
The Tata Magna EV is a 44-seater electric coach with a claimed range of up to 300 kilometers on a single charge. It features ergonomic seating, an Electronic Braking System (EBS), and Electronic Stability Control (ESC) to enhance passenger safety and comfort during long journeys.
Tata Motors currently holds a leading position in India’s electric bus market, offering models such as the Starbus EV and Ultra EV for urban transit, and the Magna EV tailored for intercity operations. As of now, over 3,600 electric buses from Tata are in service across 11 Indian cities, collectively covering more than 340 million kilometers with a reported uptime exceeding 95%. These vehicles are integrated with Fleet Edge, Tata’s proprietary connected vehicle system that enables real-time monitoring, diagnostics, and fleet management.
