Industries should come forward to build and support the electric vehicle segment, as Tamil Nadu is engaged in the creation of a comprehensive EV sector roadmap, a government official said on Wednesday.
A government facilitation centre is being launched in Coimbatore in association with 25 companies to boost the EV industry, Thiru Srinivasan, Senior advisor (EV sector) of the Department of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, FaMe TN, said.
“Tamil Nadu is one of the early movers in the EV space domain. It is now a logical step for companies to establish cell manufacturing units with one of the four companies committed to investing in Chennai and the other three are investing just across the borders of the state,” he said at the EV Summit organised by Tamil Nadu Technology Development and Promotion Centre of industry body CII.
Dr TRB Rajaa, Industries Minister, Tamil Nadu had earlier spoken to Hormazd Sorabjee, editor, Autocar India, on how his state has the EV competitive edge and what steps they are taking to maintain the moniker of the EV capital of the country.
He also mentioned that the state was looking to bring in semiconductor industries to the state, and said that big ticket announcements were expected in a year.
He also said that the state aims to adopt a cluster-based approach to developing charging infrastructure and has shortlisted six cities. The cities of Chennai, Coimbatore, Salem, Madurai, Tirunelveli, and Trichy are on the priority list of the government to form a cluster with an adequate charging infrastructure to create decent volumes.
