Swaraj Tractors Achieves Notable Gender Diversity Progress in Manufacturing

The Udaiti Foundation has released a study documenting significant improvements in gender diversity at Mahindra's Swaraj Division and Swaraj Engines Limited. According to the report, female representation at Swaraj has grown from 1.5% in 2013 to over 10% in 2024, establishing a new standard in India's tractor manufacturing industry.

The study found that women employees demonstrate lower absenteeism and higher retention rates, contributing to increased productivity and operational efficiency. This provides compelling evidence for greater inclusion of women in manufacturing environments.

Swaraj has successfully integrated women into traditionally male-dominated areas, including foundry operations that require physical endurance and technical skills. This integration was achieved through workplace redesigns featuring ergonomic adjustments, robotics, raised platforms, and gravity mechanisms that reduce physical strain while enhancing efficiency.

The company's partnerships with 15 Industrial Training Institutes, five polytechnics, and Advanced Technical Institutes have created a reliable talent pipeline. Specialized training programs focused on dexterity and on-the-job skills have equipped women to succeed in manufacturing roles.

Safety initiatives including GPS-enabled transportation, buddy systems, and women security guards have established a secure working environment. Community engagement through parental counseling and shop floor visits has helped address cultural concerns and encouraged women to pursue manufacturing careers.

Pooja Goyal, Founding CEO of The Udaiti Foundation, praised these efforts, noting that "Swaraj's journey underscores the transformative impact of investing in skills, infrastructure, and community engagement." She described it as a replicable model for advancing women's economic empowerment across the manufacturing sector.

Despite this progress, challenges remain. Women continue to be underrepresented in technical education, with only 400 out of 17,000 students in Punjab's ITIs enrolled in relevant trades such as diesel mechanics and machining. The prevalence of contractual positions also limits long-term career advancement opportunities for women.

The manufacturing sector in India has historically struggled with gender diversity, with women representing less than 20% of the workforce according to recent industry surveys. Swaraj's initiatives demonstrate how targeted infrastructure investments and community outreach can help overcome traditional barriers to women's participation in industrial settings.

Industry analysts suggest that companies prioritizing gender diversity not only address social equity concerns but also gain competitive advantages through access to a broader talent pool and diverse perspectives in problem-solving and innovation.
