Suzuki Says Kharkhoda Will Become One of the World’s Largest Car Plants

Suzuki Motor Corporation President Toshihiro Suzuki on Thursday said the company’s Kharkhoda manufacturing facility in Haryana will be expanded from its current annual production capacity of 500,000 vehicles to 1 million units, making it “one of the world’s largest car plants.”

Speaking at the India-Japan Joint Economic Forum, where Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi remotely inaugurated the Kharkhoda manufacturing facility, Suzuki said the expansion reflects the growing strength of the India-Japan industrial partnership and the success of the Make in India initiative.

“From current capacity of half a million units, the plant will be further scaled to one million units, making it one of the largest car plants of the world,” Suzuki said. He added that the favourable policy environment in India has encouraged the company to accelerate investments, employment, exports and technologies as part of India’s Viksit Bharat journey.

The Kharkhoda facility has been central to Maruti Suzuki India’s manufacturing expansion strategy. Commercial production at the first plant commenced in February 2025 with an annual production capacity of 250,000 units. A second 250,000-unit production line became operational earlier this year, taking the site’s installed capacity to 500,000 vehicles annually.

With the commissioning of the second production line, Maruti Suzuki India’s total annual production capacity has increased to about 2.65 million vehicles across its manufacturing facilities in Gurugram, Manesar, Kharkhoda and Hansalpur, Gujarat.

The company has previously outlined plans to continue expanding the Kharkhoda complex in phases until it reaches an annual production capacity of 1 million vehicles, making it one of the largest automobile manufacturing sites in Suzuki’s global network.

Suzuki described the project as a symbol of the deepening economic partnership between India and Japan, saying it reflects the success of the Make in India initiative. He added that the favourable policy environment under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership is enabling the company to accelerate investments, employment, exports and technology development in India as it contributes to the country’s Viksit Bharat vision.
