SKF Launches Patent Bay to Accelerate Sustainable Technology Development

SKF has introduced The Patent Bay, a collaborative platform that makes selected patents available to companies and innovators at no cost, aiming to accelerate the development of sustainability-focused technologies.

The initiative builds on historical precedents of open innovation, from Volvo's decision to share the three-point seatbelt design to the public release of the World Wide Web. SKF CEO Rickard Gustafson emphasized that innovation breakthroughs often result from knowledge sharing rather than proprietary control.

"Innovation is essential for a sustainable future, and history shows that real breakthroughs happen when we share," Gustafson stated. "The Patent Bay is our way of unlocking that potential—creating ripple effects across industries and society."

The platform launches against a backdrop of record patent activity. The World Intellectual Property Organization reported 3.55 million global patent applications in 2023, more than double the 1995 figure. While this indicates robust innovation, it also presents challenges regarding accessibility and cross-industry collaboration.

The first patent released through the platform is a high-performance bearing alloy originally developed for aviation applications. According to SKF Technology Innovation Manager Arnaud Ruellan, the material enables bearings to handle higher loads in more compact designs, supporting new engine architectures that can achieve up to 25 percent emission reductions.

"This new bearing material can handle higher loads in a more compact form, enabling high-performance bearing solutions for new architectures of engines designed to reduce emissions," Ruellan explained. "The same technology opens doors to further innovation, where efficiency and sustainability are key."

The Patent Bay is now operational and accessible to companies and innovators committed to advancing sustainable technologies. SKF has indicated that additional patents may be added to the platform over time.

Founded in 1907, SKF manufactures bearings, seals, lubrication systems, and condition monitoring solutions. The company operates in approximately 130 countries with around 17,000 distributor locations worldwide. In 2024, SKF reported annual sales of SEK 98,722 million and employed 38,743 people globally.

The company notes that the stated emission reduction figures refer specifically to engine fuel efficiency improvements and do not represent a full lifecycle assessment of future aircraft.
