Schaeffler India Opens Fifth Manufacturing Plant in Tamil Nadu to Boost Powertrain Production
German motion technology company invests in 16,500 sqm facility at Shoolagiri to manufacture conventional and hybrid automotive components for growing Indian market.
Schaeffler India Limited inaugurated its fifth manufacturing facility in Shoolagiri, Tamil Nadu, today, marking a significant expansion of the German motion technology company's operations in India. The 16,500 square meter facility will produce conventional and hybrid powertrain components, including planetary gear systems and hybrid transmission components.
The plant represents the first phase of development on a 108,000 square meter land plot, with full production capacity expected by the fourth quarter of 2025. The facility will focus primarily on serving the Indian automotive market while supporting the company's global expansion strategy.
Georg F.W. Schaeffler, Chairman of the Supervisory Board and Family Shareholder of Schaeffler AG, attended the inauguration ceremony alongside other senior executives including Matthias Zink, CEO Powertrain & Chassis, and Harsha Kadam, Managing Director and CEO of Schaeffler India Limited.
Schaeffler India has exceeded its initial investment commitment, spending ₹1,700 crore over the past three years from 2022 to 2024, compared to the originally planned ₹1,500 crore. The investments have supported expansion of powertrain solutions, e-mobility technologies, and industrial bearing production across the company's Indian operations.
The new facility incorporates sustainability features including rainwater harvesting, zero liquid discharge systems, LED lighting, and battery-operated material handling equipment. These elements align with Schaeffler Group's global sustainability strategy and support India's manufacturing initiatives.
Schaeffler India currently operates four other manufacturing facilities in Pune, Savli, Maneja, and Hosur, along with three research and development centers. The company employs over 3,700 people in India and has maintained operations in the country for more than 60 years.
The German parent company, Schaeffler Group, operates in 55 countries with approximately 120,000 employees worldwide. The company specializes in motion technology solutions for automotive and industrial applications, with particular focus on electric mobility and sustainable transportation technologies.
In 2023, Schaeffler India strengthened its digital presence by acquiring KRSV Innovative Auto Solutions Pvt Ltd (Koovers), a business-to-business e-commerce platform serving the automotive aftermarket sector.
The Shoolagiri facility expansion reflects the company's strategy to meet growing demand in India's automotive sector, particularly as the industry transitions toward electrification and hybrid technologies. India represents a key growth market for Schaeffler's global operations.
