Renesas Acquires Pictorus to Expand Cloud-Based Embedded Software Development Capabilities
Acquisition of California-based software developer Pictorus strengthens Renesas 365 platform with behavioral modelling, simulation and automated code generation for embedded systems.
Renesas Electronics has completed the acquisition of Pictorus, a California-based software company specialising in cloud-native tools for embedded software development, as the semiconductor supplier seeks to strengthen its digital engineering capabilities.
The acquisition brings Pictorus' behavioural modelling and simulation technology into Renesas 365, the company's recently launched platform designed to integrate electronics system development, software creation and lifecycle management. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
The move comes as software-defined architectures gain prominence across automotive, industrial and robotics applications, increasing demand for faster development cycles and earlier system validation. Renesas said the integration of Pictorus' technology will allow engineers to visually design system behaviour through browser-based block diagrams, reducing reliance on conventional coding workflows.
According to the company, the platform can automatically convert these diagrams into executable embedded software using the Rust programming language, while maintaining interoperability with C/C++ and Python environments. The capability is intended to shorten development timelines and support virtual prototyping during the early stages of product design.
"Incorporating Pictorus' capabilities advances system design on Renesas 365 by combining current architectural modelling capabilities with behavioural modelling and simulation," said Leigh Gawne, Vice President of R&D and Digital Industries, Software & Digitalisation at Renesas.
Founded in Oakland, California, Pictorus focuses on model-based embedded software development and automated code generation. The company was established by engineers with experience in vehicle software development and has developed tools aimed at simplifying the design, debugging and deployment of embedded systems.
Renesas said the acquisition aligns with its broader digitalisation strategy, which aims to create a unified electronics system design and lifecycle management platform through the integration of hardware, software and development workflows.
The company expects the addition of Pictorus' technology to enhance system-level design capabilities within Renesas 365, particularly in applications requiring software-defined functionality and rapid development cycles.
