Renault India on Saturday launched the Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 at an introductory price of Rs 16.99 lakh (ex-showroom), expanding its midsize SUV portfolio with a petrol-electric powertrain aimed at buyers seeking higher fuel efficiency without the need for external charging.

The hybrid SUV is available in three variants: Evolution at Rs 16.99 lakh, Techno at Rs 18.99 lakh and Emotion at Rs 19.49 lakh. The introductory prices are applicable to vehicles delivered until December 31, 2026. Customer deliveries will begin on November 6, with existing R-Pass holders receiving priority.

The Duster Strong Hybrid E-Tech 160 combines a 1.8-litre, four-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol engine with two electric motors and a 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery. The system delivers a combined output of 160 PS and has an ARAI-certified fuel efficiency of 29 km/l.

The hybrid system uses a 49 hp electric traction motor to drive the wheels and a 20 hp starter-generator to support the petrol engine and manage battery charging. It is paired with an eight-speed dedicated hybrid transmission that automatically selects electric, petrol or combined power depending on driving conditions.

Unlike conventional automatic transmissions that use a continuously variable system, Renault's dedicated hybrid transmission employs fixed gear ratios to manage power delivery from the petrol engine and electric motors.

The vehicle starts in electric mode, with the petrol engine engaging automatically when additional power is required or operating conditions demand it. Renault claims the Duster can operate electrically for up to 80% of the time during city driving, although the actual proportion will depend on traffic, driving style and other conditions.

The battery recharges through regenerative braking and the petrol engine, eliminating the need for an external charging connection. Renault is positioning the technology as an alternative to diesel-powered SUVs, particularly for customers looking for fuel efficiency and performance.

The hybrid becomes the third powertrain option for the new-generation Duster, joining the existing 1.0-litre and 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engines launched earlier this year.

In terms of equipment, the entry-level Evolution hybrid comes with 18-inch flex wheels, an illuminated Duster emblem, a 10.1-inch OpenR Link infotainment screen, a seven-inch TFT driver display, dual-zone automatic climate control and 38 safety features, according to Renault's launch presentation.

The Techno variant adds full LED headlamps, an electric panoramic sunroof, beige semi-leatherette upholstery, keyless access with push-button start and connected car services through the My Renault app.

The top-end Emotion variant offers 18-inch diamond-cut alloy wheels, a 10.25-inch digital driver display, ventilated front seats, six-way electrically adjustable front seats, a powered tailgate and brown leatherette upholstery.

Renault has announced an eight-year or 160,000 km warranty on the hybrid battery. The SUV is also covered under the Renault Forever programme, which offers a vehicle warranty of up to seven years or 150,000 km, subject to the programme's terms and conditions.

The company has introduced an optional Renault Protect package starting at Rs 89,900. It combines three years of comprehensive insurance, scheduled maintenance coverage and an assured resale-value offering.

The new hybrid enters a competitive midsize SUV market that already includes strong-hybrid versions of the Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara, Maruti Suzuki Victoris and Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder.

The launch also comes as Renault seeks to strengthen the Duster's sales performance. According to SIAM data, Duster dispatches declined from 2,359 units in April to 406 units in August 2026.

In a recent interaction, Renault India CEO Stéphane Deblaise acknowledged that limited powertrain choices had constrained the Duster's ability to address a wider customer base.

Deblaise said the existing lineup covered only about 20% of the market in terms of powertrain preferences. The introduction of hybrid technology and further planned engine changes could increase that coverage to as much as 90%, creating the potential for a more than fourfold increase in sales.

Renault had opened bookings for the strong-hybrid version on October 9 for Rs 21,000 through its website and dealerships.

The Duster hybrid forms part of Renault's broader strategy to rebuild its position in India through new products and a wider choice of powertrains, including hybrids and electric vehicles.
