Ola Electric has announced that its S1 X+ electric scooter equipped with the company’s in-house developed 4680 Bharat Cell battery pack has received approval under the Central Motor Vehicle Rules (CMVR), 1989 from the International Centre for Automotive Technology (ICAT), Manesar.

The certified model, the S1 X+ 5.2 kWh, is positioned as the longest-range offering in the company’s mass-market scooter portfolio. According to Ola Electric, the scooter delivers an IDC-certified range of 320 km and a top speed of 125 km/h. It is powered by an 11 kW mid-drive motor integrated with a motor control unit (MCU).

The scooter uses Ola Electric’s indigenously developed 4680 Bharat Cell technology, which the company says offers higher energy density and improved thermal capabilities. The certification marks a broader rollout of the battery technology across Ola Electric’s scooter and motorcycle portfolio as the company continues its vertically integrated manufacturing approach covering cell development, battery pack engineering and vehicle production.

Commenting on the development, an Ola Electric spokesperson said, “The government certification of the S1 X+ 5.2 kWh is a significant milestone as we bring our in-house developed 4680 Bharat Cell technology to the mass market at scale.” The spokesperson added that the product is intended to make electric mobility more practical for customers beyond major urban centres.

According to the company, the certification followed a validation programme covering vehicle safety, performance and regulatory compliance tests mandated under CMVR norms. These included constructional and functional safety checks, range validation and other performance parameters assessed by ICAT.
