Ola Electric Secures ARAI Nod For 4680 Bharat Cell Battery Pack

Ola Electric has secured ARAI certification for its indigenously developed 4680 Bharat Cell battery pack. The certification granted under the latest AIS-156 Amendment 4 safety standards issued by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, covers a 5.2kWh configuration designed and manufactured entirely in-house by the company.

With this approval, Ola becomes the first Indian EV manufacturer to receive certification for a vehicle powered by its own cell technology. The certified 4680 Bharat Cell pack will make its debut on the upcoming Ola S1 Pro+ (5.2kWh), marking the company’s transition from using imported cells to deploying its own homegrown energy solutions.

Speaking on the development, an Ola Electric spokesperson said, “With the ARAI certification of our 4680 Bharat Cell battery pack, we are ready to deliver our first vehicles powered by our own cells. This is a defining milestone in our mission to build India’s EV technology leadership and reduce reliance on global supply chains. Customers will soon experience the enhanced range, performance and reliability that our homegrown cells bring to our scooters and motorcycles.”

Until now, Ola has relied on third-party imported cells for its entire scooter and motorcycle range, all compliant with earlier AIS-156 norms. The new certification paves the way for greater vertical integration, allowing the company to optimize design, performance, and cost.

The move is also expected to improve unit economics, enhance range and power delivery, and significantly reduce dependence on global supply chains—particularly as the company’s upcoming Gigafactory in Krishnagiri, Tamil Nadu, scales up production.

Ola says, its next phase of expansion will see these battery packs integrated across its two-wheeler lineup, followed by use in future motorcycle and four-wheeler projects. Ola is also preparing to commence mass production of the Bharat Cells at its upcoming Gigafactory, which aims to be among the largest in Asia when fully operational.
