OHM Global Mobility Launches 130 Electric Buses in Chennai

OHM Global Mobility, the e-mobility arm of Ashok Leyland, has launched 130 air-conditioned electric buses in Chennai under Phase 2 of the Metropolitan Transport Corporation’s (MTC) electric bus programme.

The buses are the first batch of 500 e-buses that OHM will supply and operate for MTC under the second phase. The buses are manufactured by Switch, the electric vehicle subsidiary of Ashok Leyland.

The 130 buses were flagged off at the Tamil Nadu Secretariat in the presence of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, Transport Minister Vijay Tamilan Parthiban, Transport Secretary Nirmal Raj, MTC Managing Director D. Mohan and OHM officials.

OHM's Phase 1 Performance in Chennai

The deployment builds on OHM’s Phase 1 operations in Chennai. The company said its electric buses under the first phase have covered more than 3 crore km, while its Phase 1 depots have recorded schedule adherence of more than 99%.

Phase 2 Rollout and Fleet Operations Plan

Under Phase 2, the company will progressively deploy the remaining buses across Chennai. OHM will also provide fleet operations and maintenance services as part of the programme.

“The launch of the first 130 buses under Phase 2 marks an important milestone in Chennai’s transition towards sustainable public transportation,” said Brijesh Gubbi Suresh, CEO, OHM Global Mobility. He added that the company’s Phase 1 operations had demonstrated the ability to combine electric mobility with operational reliability.

OHM said it will support the expansion through its capabilities in electric mobility, fleet operations, maintenance and Mobility-as-a-Service solutions.
