Mercedes GLC EV Launched from ₹78.5 Lakh; Bookings Cross 1,000 in Record Time

Mercedes-Benz India has launched the new electric GLC at an introductory starting price of ₹78.5 lakh, ex-showroom, with more than 1,000 bookings in record time taking its order book through March 2027.

The company is seeking additional allocation of assembly kits to increase local production and shorten waiting periods. Deliveries to initial customers will begin immediately, with vehicles being handed over during Diwali.

“We have got 1,000-plus bookings of this car now,” Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India, said at the launch in Pune.

Iyer said the electric GLC was sold out through March 2027 and that he was approaching the company’s global leadership for “more cars, more kits, so that we can produce more here”.

At the introductory starting price, the bookings carry an indicative retail value of over ₹785 crore, including applicable taxes. This is subject to final pricing and conversion into deliveries, rather than revenue already recognised by the company.

Local production has begun, and Iyer said the manufacturing team was working to deliver vehicles during the festive period. Securing more kits would allow the company to build additional cars and fulfil orders sooner.

The GLC EV’s initial response comes as Mercedes-Benz expands its electric offering across core luxury segments. The SUV joins a new generation of products that Chairman Ola Källenius expects to strengthen demand for electric vehicles.

“I can see that the electric side is going to start taking off in a bigger way now,” Källenius told Autocar Professional in an interview ahead of the launch.

He highlighted the electric CLA and GLC while discussing Mercedes-Benz’s wider programme of 40 models over three years, spanning electric and combustion vehicles.

“So if you want to go electric, the choice will be yours, from top to bottom in our portfolio,” he said.

Iyer has separately indicated that EVs could account for 25–30 percent of Mercedes-Benz India’s sales if adequate supplies were available. The GLC EV’s opening order book puts the focus on securing sufficient allocation to meet that demand.

The launch coincided with a Mercedes-Benz board visit marking 30 years of the company’s research and development operations in India.
