MATTER Positions AI-Defined Motorcycles at Centre of Electric Mobility Strategy

MATTER, the Ahmedabad-based electric mobility and energy technology company, participated in a closed-door leadership roundtable in New Delhi on 18 March 2026, themed around "Managing Digital Transformation in the Evolving Tech Era." The event brought together founders, chief technology officers and senior executives from across the automotive and mobility sector to examine the shift toward software-defined vehicles and digitally integrated engineering platforms.

Mohal Lalbhai, Founder and Group CEO of MATTER, used the forum to present the company's framework for what it calls AI-Defined Vehicles (AI.DV) — a product philosophy centred on centralised compute architecture, over-the-air software updates and sensor-driven adaptability. Lalbhai described the broader industry shift as a progression from mechanically defined vehicles to electrically defined platforms and, ultimately, to software-defined mobility.

According to Lalbhai, embedding intelligence at the compute layer allows manufacturers to reduce hardware complexity while opening new post-purchase revenue opportunities through data-led services and software-driven capabilities. He indicated that this approach could, over time, help mobility companies lower cost structures while improving margins.

MATTER's flagship product, AERA, described as India's first geared electric motorcycle, drew interest from roundtable participants as an example of how the company is applying its vertically integrated technology stack — spanning proprietary motors, transmission systems, battery management platforms and connected vehicle interfaces — to the electric two-wheeler segment.

Lalbhai emphasised that MATTER's engineering philosophy begins at the hardware level, treating mechanical robustness as a prerequisite for layering software capabilities. He noted that the company aims to preserve traditional rider engagement while introducing intelligent features aligned with modern vehicle architecture.

The roundtable also covered wider industry themes, including the growing role of digital engineering platforms, model-based design and industrial IoT in compressing product development timelines. Discussions reflected a broader consensus that the convergence of advanced powertrain technologies, software intelligence and connected ecosystems is reshaping both vehicle capabilities and consumer expectations.

MATTER was founded in 2019 and is headquartered in Ahmedabad. The company focuses on the development of electric vehicles and energy storage technologies, with an emphasis on in-house development of core components.
