Maruti Suzuki to launch eVX by March 2025

Maruti Suzuki is gearing up to introduce its first EV, the eVX, in the Indian market sometime next year. The eVX will also have a Toyota version that will come at a later date, and both models will not just be made in India but also exported abroad. Maruti officials have now confirmed its launch by FY2025, which reiterates our previous report of its debut around October 2024, with price annoucement slated for early 2025.

First Maruti EV to launch in next FY

"Our first EV, an SUV, will be launched in the next financial year (FY2024-2025). At present, the SMG facility at Hansalpur has three plants – A, B and C. Now, to manufacture the EV, a new production line will be added," says Maruti Suzuki executive director (Corporate Affairs), Rahul Bharti.

He added, "Our EV concept car has already been unveiled. It will be a high-specification SUV having 550km range and a 60kWh battery," he said, adding that no specific number has been finalised yet about the number of units to be rolled out from the plant.

The upcoming eVX and its Toyota sibling will be built at Suzuki Motor Gujarat’s (SMG) Hansalpur facility, located 90km from Ahmedabad; SMG is a wholly owned subsidiary of Maruti Suzuki India. This plant has been operational since 2017 and recently rolled out its three millionth car. Maruti manufactures models like the Baleno, SwiftDzire, and Fronx here, which has a production capacity of over 7.5 lakh units a year.

Maruti eVX: what else is known

The eVX and its Toyota sibling, which was recently previewed as the Toyota Urban SUV concept, will sit on Toyota’s 27PL skateboard platform. This platform will also spawn more mass market EVs in the future. Both SUVs will be 4.3 metres long and will have ample cabin space thanks to its born-EV architecture. Maruti has already been road testing the eVX in India, and spied test mules have revealed some exterior and interior details of the production-spec model about which you can read here. Expect more details on Maruti’s first EV SUV to be revealed closer to its global debut.
