Maruti Suzuki India Limited has increased its solar energy capacity by 30 megawatt peak (MWp) through two new projects. A 20MWp solar power facility has been commissioned at the company's new plant in Kharkhoda, Haryana, while an additional 10MWp has been added to the existing Manesar facility.
With these developments, MSIL's total installed solar power capacity has risen from 49MWp to 79MWp over the past year. The company stated that these additions are part of a broader strategy to reduce dependence on non-renewable energy and transition toward cleaner sources.
MSIL plans to expand its solar capacity to 319MWp by the fiscal year 2030–31. The company has earmarked an investment exceeding ₹925 crore to achieve this goal. It also aims to raise the share of renewable energy in its total electricity consumption to 85% by the same period.
Managing Director and CEO Hisashi Takeuchi said the expansion aligns with Suzuki Motor Corporation’s Environment Vision 2050 and the Indian government’s renewable energy objectives. He emphasized that as the company increases its production capacity to four million units, it intends to implement proportional growth in sustainable energy usage.
MSIL stated that the solar projects contribute to its broader environmental initiatives and support the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal #7, which promotes affordable and clean energy.
India has significantly expanded its solar energy capacity in recent years, becoming one of the leading countries in renewable energy deployment. As part of its commitment under the Paris Agreement, India aims to achieve 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030, with solar power playing a central role. Large-scale solar parks, rooftop systems, and decentralized applications are being developed nationwide.
Government initiatives like the National Solar Mission and production-linked incentives have supported growth. States such as Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Karnataka are major contributors. These projects help reduce carbon emissions, enhance energy security, and support sustainable economic development across the country.
