Maruti Suzuki Swift Marks 20 Years in India with Four Generations of Development
Fourth-generation Swift features updated design, Z-Series engine, and safety enhancements; model retains 31% segment share and contributes over 10% to Maruti Suzuki’s total sales in India.
Maruti Suzuki India Limited (MSIL) marked the 20th anniversary of its premium hatchback, the Swift. First launched in May 2005, the Swift has become one of the company’s longstanding models, undergoing four generations of updates to meet changing consumer preferences.
Partho Banerjee, Senior Executive Officer, Marketing and Sales, MSIL, stated that over 3 million Swift units have been sold in India. He added that nearly one in four owners return to purchase another Swift. The model currently holds a 31% share in its segment and accounts for more than 10% of MSIL’s overall sales.
Each generation of the Swift has introduced updates in design and technology. The first-generation Swift in 2005 introduced a fresh design approach in the hatchback category. The second-generation model launched in 2011 featured a lighter, more agile build. In 2018, the third-generation Swift added high-tech features and design changes. The fourth-generation Swift, introduced in 2024, brought in a Z-Series engine designed for improved fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
The current Swift includes exterior updates like a wrap-around character line, a glossy black grille, and LED projector headlamps. Interior features include a driver-oriented cockpit, flat-bottomed steering wheel, and asymmetrical instrument cluster dials.
The model is equipped with safety features under the ARENA Safety Shield, such as six airbags, ESP, ABS with EBD, Hill Hold Control, reverse parking sensors, three-point seatbelts, and seatbelt reminders. It also comes with a standard warranty of three years or 100,000 kilometres.
