Mahindra Thar ROXX Gets Four-Channel Immersive Dolby Atmos Audio Technology
Mahindra & Mahindra has also increased the production of the Dolby Atmos-equipped Thar ROXX AX7L variants to reduce customer waiting times amid growing demand.
Mahindra & Mahindra has introduced Dolby Atmos technology in its Thar ROXX AX7L variant, making it the first SUV worldwide to feature 4-channel immersive audio capability. The collaboration with Dolby Laboratories represents a development in automotive entertainment systems.
The Thar ROXX AX7L integrates the Dolby Atmos system with a 9-speaker Harman Kardon audio setup. The technology allows sound to move around the vehicle cabin, creating spatial audio effects. Gaana streaming service is built into the infotainment system, providing access to Dolby Atmos-compatible music content.
Karan Grover, Senior Director of Commercial Partnerships for India, Middle East and Africa at Dolby Laboratories, said the collaboration aims to transform vehicle interiors into concert-like spaces. The partnership targets customers who seek enhanced audio experiences during travel.
Velusamy R, President of Automotive Technology & Product Development at Mahindra & Mahindra, described the integration as part of the company's innovation strategy. The technology works across different driving conditions and terrain types.
Mahindra has increased production of the Dolby Atmos-equipped Thar ROXX to address market demand and reduce customer waiting periods. The move comes as automotive manufacturers increasingly focus on in-cabin technology features to differentiate their products.
The Thar brand has been a significant contributor to Mahindra's SUV portfolio in India. The original Thar, launched as a lifestyle vehicle, gained popularity among buyers seeking off-road capability and distinctive design. The ROXX variant extends the brand with additional features and comfort elements.
Dolby Atmos technology, originally developed for cinema applications, has expanded into home entertainment, gaming, and mobile devices. The automotive integration represents the company's efforts to enter new market segments. The technology creates three-dimensional sound by adding height channels to traditional surround sound systems.
The automotive audio market has seen increased investment as manufacturers compete on interior experience features. Premium audio systems have become standard offerings in higher trim levels across various vehicle segments.
Mahindra & Mahindra, established in 1945, operates across multiple sectors including farm equipment, utility vehicles, and financial services. The company holds leadership positions in the Indian tractor and utility vehicle markets. Dolby Laboratories, founded in 1965, develops audio and visual technologies for entertainment applications.
