Mahindra Records 17% Growth in May Auto Sales with Strong SUV Performance
The Indian automaker sold 84,110 vehicles last month, driven by 21% growth in utility vehicle segment amid sustained market demand
Mahindra & Mahindra reported total automotive sales of 84,110 vehicles in May 2025, representing a 17% increase compared to the same period last year. The Mumbai-based company sold 52,431 SUVs in the domestic market during May 2025, marking a 21% year-on-year growth, according to data released Saturday.
The utility vehicle segment, which includes SUVs sold through subsidiary Mahindra Electric Automobile Limited, reached 54,819 units when including export sales. This performance builds on the company's momentum from earlier months, following April sales of 52,330 SUVs with 28% growth and March sales of 48,048 SUVs with 18% growth.
Commercial vehicle sales presented mixed results across categories. The company sold 21,392 commercial vehicles domestically in May. Light commercial vehicles under 2 tons declined 18% to 2,580 units, while the 2-3.5 ton category increased 14% to 17,718 units. The heavier commercial vehicle segment above 3.5 tons showed modest 1% growth with 1,094 units sold. Three-wheeler sales, including electric variants, rose 11% to 6,635 units.
Export performance showed significant improvement, with 3,652 vehicles exported in May 2025, representing a 37% year-on-year increase. Year-to-date export figures reached 7,033 units, up 55% from 4,528 units in the corresponding period of the previous fiscal year.
"In May, we achieved SUV sales of 52,431 units, a growth of 21%, and total vehicle sales of 84,110 units, a 17% growth compared to the same month last year," said Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO of Mahindra's Automotive Division. He attributed the performance to continued demand across the company's internal combustion engine and battery electric vehicle portfolio.
The sales figures follow Mahindra's record-breaking fiscal year 2025 performance, where the company achieved its highest-ever annual SUV sales of 551,487 units. This milestone positioned Mahindra as a significant player in India's passenger vehicle market, narrowly trailing Tata Motors for the third position.
Mahindra's farm equipment division also reported positive results for May, with domestic tractor sales of 38,914 units representing a 10% increase over May 2024. Total tractor sales, including exports, reached 40,643 units with 10% growth year-on-year.
The company operates as part of the Mahindra Group, founded in 1945, which employs 260,000 people across more than 100 countries. The conglomerate holds leadership positions in farm equipment, utility vehicles, information technology, and financial services in India, and ranks as the world's largest tractor manufacturer by volume.
