Mahindra Phases Out Convertible Top Variants of the Thar

The Mahindra Thar range in India has been significantly trimmed, with several variants discontinued. Sources tell us that Mahindra has discontinued the Thar Convertible Top variants, the AX 4WD variants, and the LX variants that came with an open differential.

2025 Mahindra Thar variant line-up
Mahindra Thar AX now available only with 1.5-litre diesel

The Mahindra Thar was previously available in a total of 19 variants. However, with the removal of the Convertible Top variants, AX 4WD variants, and LX variants with an open differential, that number has now been reduced to 11. This variant rejig also means that the entry-level AX trim will only be available in RWD form, paired with the 1.5-litre diesel engine. It should be noted that despite the removal of select variants, the Mahindra Thar’s overall price range remains unchanged. It continues to be priced from Rs 11.50 lakh, with prices for the top-spec 2.2-litre diesel LX AT Earth Edition 4WD topping out at Rs 17.60 lakh.

Mahindra Thar facelift launch in 2026
To borrow design elements and features from Thar Roxx

As we recently reported, Mahindra has begun working on the Thar facelift (codenamed W515). The mid-cycle refresh will adopt a design similar to that of the Thar Roxx and borrow some features, such as the larger infotainment touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster and a sunroof on hard-top variants. No mechanical updates are expected when it launches in 2026.
