Magna opens vehicle parts manufacturing facility in Maharashtra
Magna has opened a new manufacturing plant in Chakan, Maharashtra, to produce latches and mirrors for carmakers in the region.
Global automotive supplier Magna has opened a manufacturing facility in Chakan, Maharashtra, to produce latches and mirrors for carmakers in western India. The 65,000 sq. ft. plant is expected to create over 300 jobs in the next three years.
Jeff Hunt, President of Magna MML (Mechatronics, Mirrors, and Lighting), inaugurated the facility on Wednesday through a traditional ceremony that included a puja followed by ribbon-cutting and plaque unveiling.
"Our commitment to innovation and operational excellence helps us continue to meet the evolving needs of our customers, delivering high-quality products that drive the future of mobility," Hunt said at the inauguration.
The facility strengthens Magna's presence in India, where it currently employs 7,000 people across 14 manufacturing and assembly facilities, and five engineering, product and sales offices.
Magna's expansion in Maharashtra comes at a time when global automotive suppliers are increasing their footprint in India to cater to growing demand from car manufacturers. The country's automotive component industry registered a turnover of ₹5.6 trillion in FY23, according to the Automotive Component Manufacturers Association of India (ACMA).
The Canadian company, founded in 1957, is one of the world's largest automotive suppliers with over 170,000 employees globally. It designs, develops and manufactures automotive systems, assemblies, modules and components for car manufacturers worldwide.
The Chakan industrial area, located near Pune, hosts several major automotive companies including Volkswagen, Mercedes-Benz, and Mahindra & Mahindra, making it a strategic location for automotive suppliers to set up manufacturing facilities.
