Kia India Bets Big on Sorento for Larger Share of SUV Market

The South Korean automaker has set an ambitious monthly sales target of up to 4,000 units for the Sorento, that could support high level localisation including hybrid powertrains.

Kia India is betting big on the new Sorento to expand its presence in the fast growing SUV market with aggressive pricing, hybrid technology and increased localisation.

The three-row Sorento, launched in the price range of Rs 27.99 - 40.39 lakh, is also the South Korean automaker's first model in India to offer a hybrid powertrain.

Kia India Managing Director and CEO Gwanggu Lee said the company initially had no plans to introduce the Sorento in India because of the limited size of the market the vehicle is expected to address.

"Originally Kia India, didn't have any plans to launch the Sorento first. Because if we just consider the market opportunity, it is very limited," Lee said.

Kia's India team had to persuade its headquarters in South Korea to approve the project, Lee said, describing the move as an ambitious one involving a significant financial hit to arrive at a competitive price.

"That is why we took a long time to persuade the headquarter because this is a huge financial pressure," he said.

The carmaker is targeting monthly sales of up to 4,000 units of the Sorento, although Lee acknowledged that it is ambitious for a segment where demand has historically been limited.

"4,000, even 3,000 a month is very, very ambitious," Lee said. However, the company believes that by setting the entry price lower than the Rs 30 lakh mark would drive volumes. The Sorrento will compete with Mahindra XUV7X0, Toyota HyCross and Fortuner, and Tata Motors' Safari and the Skoda Kodiaq.

Kia believes the size of the existing market does not necessarily reflect its potential. Lee pointed to the company's experience with the Seltos, arguing that a segment can expand significantly when more products and buyers enter it.

"This is a very ambitious approach and if we just analyse the market itself, it is a very limited opportunity. But like Kia  expanded the mid-size SUV market when we entered India with the Seltos we hope to do the same with the Sorento.

Kia believes there could be demand from existing customers looking to move up from smaller SUVs, particularly as its current customer base matures.

"Because of course, one of the key aspect for me to explain to my headquarters is a Seltos customer looking to and we need to have something upgrade and the Sorento is the obvious choice” Lee said.

He also sees an opportunity to attract buyers seeking alternatives in the higher end of the market.

"Still, I believe that Sorento is huge opportunity to explore some higher segments”  Lee said

The hybrid version is central to Kia's strategy for the model. Lee said the company had found interest in hybrid technology among Indian customers, including those who already owned Kia vehicles.

“They are very much interested to have a hybrid technology," he said.

The Sorento's launch marks a broader shift in Kia's India product strategy as it expands beyond its existing portfolio of the Sonet, Seltos, Syros, Carens and Carnival and adds more powertrain choices.

The company has also annouced entery into the CNG market with the Carens, while its electric vehicle portfolio is set to expand. Kia has indicated that eight of the 10 models it plans to introduce from 2026 will feature some form of electrification.

CNG now accounts for about 22% of cars sold in India, making it the second-largest powertrain segment in the country.

Kia is also expected to introduce a hybrid version of the Seltos in 2027, while the Carnival could receive a hybrid option while retaining its diesel engine.

Localisation will be important to Kia's ability to make hybrids more competitive and build volumes, Lee said.

"Localization is the main topic if any company wants to do business in India" he said.

Kia plans to increase local content in the Sorento over time and is investing in India to locally produce its hybrid engine from next year, Lee said.

Lee said localisation decisions depended on whether the company could establish a clear long-term outlook for a product and its volumes.

"It's a huge investment. So if the future is not clear for the future development of the product, then even our company would hesitate to take a decision on investment”

The wider product and powertrain expansion could also increase manufacturing complexity and require additional capacity.

Kia is studying a new production line with an annual capacity of around 200,000 units at its Anantapur plant in Andhra Pradesh, although the proposal remains under evaluation.

The company is targeting domestic sales of around 410,000 units and a market share of 7.6% by 2030, while expanding its sales and service network to around 800 sales outlets.
In FY26, the automaker retailed 2,79,363 units and had a market share of 5.8%.

Kia grew by about 13% in the last financial year, ahead of the Indian passenger vehicle market's growth of approximately 8%, supported by the Seltos and Sonet and measures to correct the positioning of the Syros.

The new-generation Seltos has provided fresh momentum, with monthly volumes understood to have reached around 10,000-12,000 units, while the Sonet sold around 115,000 units in the last financial year.

For Kia, the Sorento represents a larger test of whether it can replicate its earlier success in identifying gaps in India's vehicle market.

"It was not an easy decision. But we are taking a huge risk wirh this model," Lee said.
