Kia India Bets Big on Sorento; Enters Hybrid Segment

The South Korean automaker has set an ambitious monthly sales target of up to 4,000 units for the Sorento that could support localisation of hybrid powertrains.

Kia India Bets Big on Sorento; Enters Hybrid Segment

Kia India is betting big on the new Sorento to expand its presence in the fast growing SUV market with aggressive pricing, hybrid technology and increased localisation.

The three-row Sorento, launched in the price range of Rs 27.99 - 40.39 lakh, is also the South Korean automaker's first model in India to offer a hybrid powertrain.

Kia India Managing Director and CEO Gwanggu Lee said the company initially had no plans to introduce the Sorento in India because of the limited size of the market the vehicle is expected to address.

Kia's India team had to persuade its headquarters in South Korea to approve the project, Lee said, describing the move as an ambitious one involving significant financial pressure. "That is why we took a long time to persuade the headquarters, because this is a huge financial pressure," he said.

The carmaker is targeting monthly sales of up to 4,000 units of the Sorento, although Lee acknowledged that it is ambitious for a segment where demand has historically been limited.

"Even 4,000, even 3,000 a month, is very, very ambitious," Lee said. The company believes that by setting the entry price lower than the Rs 30 lakh would drive volume. With a wide price range Sorento will compete with Mahindra XUV7XO, Toyota HyCross and Fortuner, Tata Motors Safari and Skoda Kodiaq.

Kia believes the size of the existing market does not necessarily reflect its potential. Lee pointed to the company's experience with the Seltos, arguing that a segment can expand significantly when more products and buyers enter it.

"So you are right, this is a very ambitious approach. If we just analyse the market itself, it is a very limited opportunity. But if we explore, like Kia India did when we entered India, then we develop the market [mid-size SUV]," he said. Kia believes there could be demand from existing customers looking to move up from smaller SUVs, particularly as its current customer base matures.

"One of the key points I explained to headquarters is that Seltos customers looking to upgrade need something, and that's why we took this decision," Lee said. He also sees an opportunity to attract buyers seeking alternatives in the higher end of the market.

The hybrid version is central to Kia's strategy for the model. Lee said the company had found interest in hybrid technology among Indian customers, including those who already owned Kia vehicles.

The Sorento's launch marks a broader shift in Kia's India product strategy as it expands beyond its existing portfolio of the Sonet, Seltos, Syros, Carens and Carnival and adds more powertrain choices.

The company has also announced entry into the CNG market with the Carens, and Carens Clavis while its electric vehicle portfolio is set to expand. Kia has indicated that eight of the 10 models it plans to introduce from 2026 will feature some form of electrification.

CNG now accounts for about 22% of cars sold in India, making it the second-largest powertrain segment in the country.

Kia is also expected to introduce a hybrid version of the Seltos in 2027, while it showcased the Carnival hybrid today and is expected to share more details soon.

"Localisation is a key topic for any company that wants to build a business here," he said. The company plans to increase local content in the Sorento over time and is investing in India to locally produce its hybrid engine from next year, Lee said.

"Of course it's not 100% from the beginning, but we will upgrade it. For example, the hybrid engine will be locally produced. Right now it isn't, but from next year we are investing here, and then the hybrid engine will also be produced here."

Lee said localisation decisions depended on whether the company could establish a clear long-term outlook for a product and its volumes. "It's very difficult because it's a huge investment. So if there isn't clarity about future development, it's not easy for our company to make a decision on direct investment," he said.

The wider product and powertrain expansion could also increase manufacturing complexity and require additional capacity. Kia is studying a new production line with an annual capacity of around 200,000 units at its Anantapur plant in Andhra Pradesh, although the proposal remains under evaluation.

The company is targeting domestic sales of around 410,000 units and a market share of 7.6% by 2030, while expanding its sales and service network to around 800 touchpoints.

In FY26, the automaker retailed 2,79,363 units and had a market share of 5.8%. Kia grew by about 13% in the last financial year, ahead of the Indian passenger vehicle market's growth of approximately 8%, supported by the Seltos and Sonet, and by measures to correct the positioning of the Syros.

The new-generation Seltos has provided fresh momentum, with monthly volumes understood to have reached around 10,000-12,000 units, while the Sonet sold around 115,000 units in the last financial year.

For Kia, the Sorento represents a larger test of whether it can replicate its earlier success in identifying gaps in India's vehicle market. "It was not an easy decision, but yes, we are taking a huge risk with this model," Lee said.
