JSW Motors will launch its first vehicle in India before Diwali this year, Director Parth Jindal told a leading business television channel at Davos 2026.
He informed that the production is scheduled to begin in August at the company's Rs 14,000 crore facility in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar, Maharashtra, with customer deliveries set to commence in September.
The plant, for which JSW Group Chairman Sajjan Jindal signed an MOU with Maharashtra Chief Minister last year, is being built in phases. The general assembly line will be ready by June, while the paint shop is expected to come online in October.
Initially, JSW will import parts from China and assemble vehicles locally. However, from October, the company aims for 80% localization—excluding only battery cells. "From the battery pack to the steel for the BIW parts, the motor, the seats, the glass, the tyres, everything else will be localised," Jindal told CNBC TV18. The company is also pursuing battery cell technology to reach 100% local production by the following year.
According to our sister publication Autocar India, the first vehicle will be based on the Jetour T2, with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and measuring 4.7 meters—larger than the Tata Safari. It will carry JSW branding, not the Jetour name.
Jindal called it a "very big muscle car" meant to establish the brand and its plug-in hybrid technology, which he believes is the right interim solution while India's charging infrastructure develops. Though this first vehicle will be priced higher to position the brand, subsequent models will target the mass market.
"We aim to play in that Rs 15 to 30 lakh price point," Jindal said, noting that over 3.5 million of India's 4.5 million annual car sales in 2025 fall below Rs 15 lakh. A second model in the Rs 15-20 lakh range is planned for 2027.
Drawing on JSW Group's experience with MG Motor India, acquired in 2024, Jindal highlighted 'pricing', as a critical factor for EV success, which helped JSW MG Motor India to break into top 2 EV makers in 2025.
Jindal underlined how good pricing helped the MG Windsor to be "the fastest-selling EV in the country for the last 16 months. "EVs in India, for them to work, you need to be at the right price point."
Autocar India reported that JSW has partnered with Chery, the Chinese automaker that launched Jetour in 2018. The T2 uses a 1.5-litre plug-in hybrid powertrain, available globally in both AWD and FWD, though the India variant hasn't been specified. While based on a global platform, JSW has adapted the design for India and is finalising the vehicle name.
