JSW Motors Gets Ready for Independent Auto Venture: Launches Dealer Hunt
Aggressive timelines set the stage for bookings by March 2026.
JSW Motors, the standalone automotive arm of the JSW Group, has officially kicked off its retail expansion in India with a striking full-page newspaper advertisement in The Economic Times, inviting dealer partners to "join the drive."
The ad, featuring a shadowy silhouette of an SUV with glowing headlights against a dramatic backdrop, signals the company's entry into the PV segment, independent of its joint venture with MG Motor India.
As Parth Jindal, Managing Director of JSW Motors, previously stated, the focus is on mainstream EVs and hybrids by 2027, positioning the brand in a competitive market dominated by established players. This move positions JSW Motors to become India's third homegrown PV brand, following Tata Motors and Mahindra & Mahindra, as it ramps up plans for new energy vehicles (NEVs) like plug-in hybrids (PHEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs).
JSW Motors has launched a dealer scouting initiative ahead of its planned entry into the new energy vehicle (NEV) segment. The company has confirmed a greenfield manufacturing plant in Chhatrapati Sambhaji Nagar (formerly Aurangabad), Maharashtra, with production scheduled to begin in the second half of 2026.
The outreach to prospective dealers comes as JSW positions itself as part of India’s mobility transition, building on its legacy in infrastructure and industrial growth. Interested parties have been invited to submit expressions of interest by March 11, 2026.
The teaser image features an SUV, aligning with reports that JSW's debut model will be a PHEV SUV based on Chery Automobile's Jetour T2, priced around Rs 45 lakh (ex-showroom). The launch is expected in Q2 or H2 2026, featuring a 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine paired with electric motors, offering front-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive options, and aims to compete in the Rs 15-30 lakh segment.
JSW Motors' independent foray builds on its broader ambitions in the auto sector, separate from the JSW MG Motor India JV, where JSW holds a 35% stake. The company has committed $3 billion over five years for EV and hybrid development, including the Maharashtra plant with an initial capacity of 500,000 units annually, scalable to 2 million.
Another facility in Odisha spans 900 acres for additional production. Partnerships focus on technology licensing rather than equity JVs, with Chery as the lead collaborator for components and platforms. JSW is targeting 70-75% localization at launch, rising to 100%, to navigate India-China trade sensitivities and secure government approvals for imports.
The product roadmap includes 3-4 models in 2026, starting with the PHEV SUV, followed by a pure EV based on Chery's iCar V23 in 2027, and additional SUVs, PHEVs, and range extenders, eschewing traditional internal combustion engines.
In the CV space, JSW has already achieved ARAI certification for its first 12-meter electric bus as of February 20, 2026, with trucks and buses slated for early rollout. The company aims for 1 million JSW-branded vehicles on Indian roads by 2030.
Challenges remain, including potential delays from regulatory hurdles on Chinese components. However, JSW has set an aggressive timeline, with official bookings expected to commence around March 10, 2026.
