JSW MG Motor India is betting on plug-in hybrid technology as an alternative to high-performance diesel SUVs as it seeks to establish a larger presence in India’s new-energy vehicle market.
The Hector Tomahawk PHEV is central to that effort. It combines an electric motor for immediate response and more than 115km of battery-only driving with a petrol engine that extends its combined range beyond 1,100km.
The powertrain is one part of a wider product and ownership proposition. JSW MG is also relying on the Tomahawk’s cabin space, equipment and operating-cost claims to compete with established premium SUVs. The PHEV will be offered as a seven-seater, while the EV will be available in five- and seven-seat configurations.
The complete PHEV is priced from Rs 25.69 lakh. Under Battery-as-a-Service, the upfront price falls to Rs 21.79 lakh, with a battery-rental charge of Rs 3.20 per kilometre. Petrol and electricity costs are additional.
On a like-for-like basis, JSW MG estimates that the Tomahawk PHEV will cost around Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2 lakh more than comparable diesel automatic SUVs. The company expects lower operating costs and the overall product package to support that premium.
Its full-vehicle price places the PHEV alongside higher diesel automatic variants of the Mahindra XUV 7XO, Tata Safari and Tata Harrier. The XUV 7XO diesel range extends to Rs 25.79 lakh, the Safari to Rs 26.76 lakh and the Harrier to Rs 25.24 lakh.
A 40,000-Unit a Month Diesel Opportunity
JSW MG estimates that the diesel-dominated premium midsize SUV market accounts for around 40,000 units a month. The category includes models such as the XUV 7XO, Safari and Harrier.
The corresponding premium midsize electric SUV category contributes around 10,000 units a month, according to the company. It includes models such as the Mahindra XEV 9S, Tata Harrier EV and Kia Carens Clavis EV.
“If you look at the diesel C-sized market, that is about 40,000 units. The C-sized EV market is about 10,000. So, the total potential is 50,000,” says Anurag Mehrotra, Managing Director, JSW MG Motor India.
The Tomahawk PHEV currently has no direct mass-market rival in India. Instead, it will compete with diesel SUVs that already offer strong performance, highway range, broad variant line-ups and established service networks.
According to surveys cited by Mehrotra, diesel SUV owners in this category typically cover 18,000-20,000km annually. Many have long daily commutes and undertake regular outstation journeys.
“They want the fuel efficiency of a diesel because they are travelling longer distances,” he says. “For them, there has not been a new-energy choice. The plug-in hybrid takes away the range issue completely, but still gives you the unit economics of an EV.”
The proposition is particularly relevant to single-car households, which need the same vehicle to handle daily commuting, a full passenger load and long-distance family travel.
Vinay Raina, Chief Commercial Officer, JSW MG Motor India, said many such customers choose diesel because it remains the practical option for their usage rather than because of a fixed preference for the fuel.
“The Indian consumer is willing to experiment,” Raina said. He added that companies must not betray that trust. Early adopters would be important, but wider acceptance would depend on the technology delivering what the company promises, he said.
The Tomahawk PHEV combines a 20.5kWh battery with a 1.5-litre petrol engine. It can operate in pure-electric, series-hybrid, parallel-hybrid and engine-direct modes, selecting between them according to speed, power demand, battery charge and road conditions.
Its powertrain produces 148kW and can accelerate from zero to 100kph in under nine seconds, according to JSW MG. The petrol engine has a claimed thermal efficiency of 43.2%.
The Running Cost Calculation
JSW MG estimates that travelling 1,000km in the PHEV could cost Rs 3,000-4,000, compared with Rs 10,000-12,000 in a diesel SUV. The calculation assumes regular charging and substantial use of the electric mode.
“The plug-in hybrid will be close to a third of the cost of running a diesel,” Mehrotra says.
The company says the PHEV can return around 22kpl when operated largely as a hybrid. It claims this could increase to between 30kpl and 50kpl if the battery is charged regularly and most daily travel is completed electrically.
The higher figures include kilometres covered using electricity and are not directly comparable with the fuel economy of a diesel vehicle. Charging costs must also be included when calculating total expenditure.
An owner who charges at home and completes most weekday travel on battery power could reduce petrol consumption substantially. An owner who rarely plugs in will rely more heavily on the engine and lose much of the projected saving.
BaaS reduces the initial price by separating the battery cost from the vehicle’s upfront cost. However, the Rs 3.20-per-kilometre rental must be added to petrol and electricity expenses when comparing ownership costs.
Bookings have opened, with PHEV deliveries scheduled to begin in November 2026.
Space and Technology
At 4,745mm long, 1,850mm wide and 1,770mm tall, the Tomahawk has the dimensions of a large premium SUV. Its 2,810mm wheelbase underpins both body configurations. The PHEV is a seven-seater, while the EV can be specified with five or seven seats.
According to JSW MG, the five-seat EV provides 610 litres of boot capacity. In the seven-seat configuration, boot capacity is 528 litres with the third row folded.
Key equipment includes a 15.6-inch (39.62cm) central touchscreen, a digital instrument cluster, ventilated front seats, a panoramic sunroof and Level 2 advanced driver-assistance technology.
A Jio-powered package includes a generative AI-based conversational assistant, while the iSmart system provides more than 80 connected features.
Most diesel rivals offer comparable equipment in their higher variants. The Tomahawk will therefore need its combination of cabin space, electric range and lower claimed operating costs to differentiate it.
Two Powertrains on a Common Architecture
The Tomahawk EV gives JSW MG access to the premium midsize electric SUV category. Unlike the PHEV, it enters a market with several established alternatives.
The Kia Carens Clavis EV is priced between Rs 18.04 lakh and Rs 25 lakh, the Mahindra XEV 9S between Rs 20.65 lakh and Rs 29.95 lakh, and the Tata Harrier EV between Rs 21.69 lakh and Rs 29.19 lakh.
The Tomahawk EV is priced from Rs 19.49 lakh for the complete vehicle. Under BaaS, it starts at Rs 13.99 lakh, with a battery rental of Rs 4.90 per kilometre.
Its 69.2kWh battery provides a claimed range of 517km, while its electric motor produces 150kW and 310Nm.
Both versions are based on MG ADAPT, an architecture designed to support battery-electric, plug-in hybrid, range-extended electric and hybrid powertrains.
“When we introduced MG ADAPT, we said the road to new energy would not be the same for everyone,” says Parth Jindal, Director, JSW MG Motor India. “That is exactly why the platform was designed to enable more than one answer.”
JSW MG is targeting monthly sales of 5,000-6,000 units for the Tomahawk range, according to Jindal. The company has not disclosed the expected split between the EV and PHEV.
At that level, the model would account for around 10-12% of the 50,000-unit monthly premium midsize SUV opportunity identified by the company.
Local content in the Tomahawk is currently around 45%. JSW MG plans to increase it to approximately 70% by next year, with the investment approved by its board.
The company expects its annual manufacturing capacity to reach around 160,000 vehicles by March 2027. Mehrotra says plant and supplier capacity should not restrict the Tomahawk programme.
JSW MG previously expanded the Windsor programme beyond its initial plan of around 29,000 vehicles annually. Supplier capacity for the model has since increased to approximately 45,000-50,000 units.
The EV must find space in a widening field of electric SUVs. The PHEV faces a different task because its projected savings depend on regular charging and customers understanding how the powertrain works.
Dealers will need to explain the technology, identify customers whose driving patterns suit it and set realistic expectations around range and running costs.
Diesel buyers already have performance, range, efficiency and established ownership support. The Tomahawk PHEV will have to match those fundamentals while using electric driving, space and technology to justify the switch.
