JSW Greentech has received the CMVR Type Approval Certificate for its “JSW 12M 51+D AC SDX” electric bus from the Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), marking a key regulatory milestone for the company’s commercial electric vehicle portfolio. JSW is likely to produce this bus out of its factory in Aurangabad

The certification confirms that the 12-metre electric bus complies with the Central Motor Vehicles Rules (CMVR) and meets the safety, performance and regulatory standards required for deployment on Indian roads. Type approval from ARAI is mandatory for homologation and commercial sale of vehicles in India, covering aspects such as structural safety, braking performance, electrical systems, and overall compliance with prescribed norms.

The JSW 12M 51+D AC SDX is positioned as a full-size, air-conditioned electric bus designed for urban and intercity applications. The “51+D” configuration indicates seating capacity tailored for mass transit requirements, aligning with state transport undertakings and fleet operators seeking higher-capacity electric solutions.

With this certification, JSW Greentech moves closer to large-scale commercial deployment of the model across public and private fleet operators. The company said the approval underscores its focus on building next-generation electric buses and trucks that prioritise reliability, operational efficiency and long-term value.

The development comes at a time when India’s electric bus segment is witnessing steady expansion, driven by state-led procurement programmes, urban emission reduction targets and growing demand for cleaner public transport solutions. Industry estimates indicate that electric bus tenders by state transport corporations and municipal bodies have increased over the past few years, supported by policy incentives and viability gap funding mechanisms.

JSW Greentech stated that the certification represents a significant step in its broader strategy to strengthen its presence in sustainable commercial mobility. The company is focusing on integrating advanced electric drivetrains, battery systems and vehicle telematics to enhance uptime, reduce total cost of ownership and support fleet-level efficiency.

With the CMVR Type Approval in place, the JSW 12M electric bus is now eligible for commercial rollout, subject to order pipelines and state-level procurement processes. The company indicated that it will continue to expand its electric commercial vehicle portfolio in line with evolving regulatory frameworks and market demand.
