JSW Motors, the homegrown automotive company of JSW Group, is set to call its first model the Combat. The SUV will be based on the Chery Jetour T2 and is expected to make its India debut during the upcoming festive season.
The Combat will be positioned as a rugged, five-seat SUV with a plug-in hybrid powertrain, and JSW Motors is understood to be targeting an aggressive price point.
JSW Combat: Price and positioning
JSW Motors is understood to be targeting a price range of Rs 30 lakh-50 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Combat.
If priced within this range, the Combat would be positioned as a relatively unusual proposition as a five-seat plug-in hybrid SUV. Its closest hybrid rival could be the Honda ZR-V, while its rugged styling and SUV proportions could also make it an alternative to the Toyota Fortuner.
JSW Combat: Exterior design
The Combat is expected to retain much of the Jetour T2’s boxy and upright styling, with JSW-specific changes to the headlamps, grille and bumpers, along with the addition of JSW badging.
The SUV features squarish LED headlamps, chunky bumpers, extensive body cladding, roof rails and 20-inch alloy wheels. At the rear, vertically oriented LED tail-lamps and a spare wheel mounted on the boot lid give it a rugged appearance. The spare wheel is housed in a squircle-shaped cover, adding to the SUV’s distinctive design.
JSW Combat: Interior and features
The cabin is expected to closely follow the global-spec Jetour T2, with a clean dashboard layout.
Key elements include a 15.6-inch infotainment touchscreen, 10.6-inch digital driver’s display and four-spoke steering wheel with JSW branding.
The global T2’s equipment list includes a 12-speaker sound system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, panoramic sunroof, 540-degree camera, powered and ventilated front seats, ambient lighting and adaptive cruise control.
The JSW Combat is expected to broadly match this feature list.
JSW Combat: Plug-in hybrid powertrain
The Combat is likely to use a 1.5-litre direct-injection turbo-petrol engine paired with two electric motors and an 18.4kWh battery.
In the global-spec Jetour T2, this plug-in hybrid setup produces a combined 360hp and 610Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels through a 3-speed dedicated hybrid transmission.
While the T2 is available with both front- and all-wheel drive in global markets, the Combat is expected to be offered only with front-wheel drive.
JSW Combat: Electric Range and Charging
The 18.4kWh battery in the global-spec T2 provides an NEDC-claimed electric range of 90km. Using a 6.6kW AC charger, the battery can be charged from 30 to 100 percent in around three hours. A 50kW DC charger can take the battery from 30 to 80 percent in a claimed 27 minutes.
The T2’s combined driving range is rated at 1,200km, although the final specifications for the JSW Combat are yet to be confirmed.
