India’s Public EV Charging Consumption Could Cross 2,500 MU in FY27: Kazam

India’s electricity consumption at public EV charging stations could cross 2,500–3,000 million units in FY27 as charging infrastructure expands and fleet electrification gathers pace, according to Akshay Shekhar, Co-Founder and CEO of Kazam.

Electricity consumption at public charging stations has already more than tripled in two years, rising from 465.85 million units in FY24 to 1,558.69 million units in FY26. The growth is also becoming more geographically distributed, with states outside Delhi accounting for a larger share of consumption.

Delhi's Share of EV Charging Consumption Declines

Delhi’s share of public charging station electricity consumption fell from 43.61% in FY24 to around 27.9% in FY26. In absolute terms, however, consumption in the capital more than doubled from 203.1 million units to 453.3 million units over the same period.

“Delhi’s share of PCS electricity consumption dropped from 43.61% in FY24 to approximately 27.9% in FY26, but this does not imply a decline in total consumption,” Shekhar said.

Karnataka, Telangana and Maharashtra Drive Charging Growth

Maharashtra, Karnataka, Telangana, Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh are among the states witnessing rapid expansion, signalling a broader spread of EV charging demand across the country.

Karnataka and Telangana have emerged among the top-consuming states, supported by expanding charging infrastructure and growing EV ecosystems. Karnataka already had significant charging infrastructure and has received further support for additional chargers under the PM E-DRIVE scheme.

The presence of EV startups, OEMs, fleet operators and digitally savvy customers is also supporting demand. As EV adoption rises, demand for charging increases, while wider charging availability improves confidence among individual customers and fleet operators.

Uttar Pradesh Emerges as a Key EV Charging Market

Uttar Pradesh is emerging as another significant market, driven by strong penetration of e-rickshaws and electric three-wheelers, its proximity to the National Capital Region, logistics movements and growing highway and intercity charging.

In western Uttar Pradesh, Noida, Ghaziabad and Meerut are benefiting from commercial and logistics activity. Agra, Mathura, Aligarh and Kanpur are contributing through tourism and intercity travel. The increasing formalisation of charging loads is also adding to electricity consumption at public charging stations in the state.

Infrastructure Push Needed to Sustain FY27 Growth

Kazam expects the growth trajectory to continue in FY27, although the pace will depend on charger deployment and fleet electrification.

“For FY27, we anticipate that PCS power consumption could exceed 2,500–3,000 million units, depending on the pace of charger deployment and fleet electrification,” Shekhar said.

The expansion also puts greater focus on the electricity infrastructure supporting charging networks. Along with charger installation, reliable power supply, smart load management, high charger uptime and interoperability will become important as public charging demand increases.

States able to combine these elements with continued charger deployment are expected to lead the next phase of public EV charging growth as India’s EV transition increasingly becomes an energy infrastructure story.
