India's Auto Industry Posts Strong February Gains Across All Segments
SIAM data shows total vehicle production rose 22% year-on-year in February 2026, with domestic sales and exports also recording double-digit growth across passenger vehicles, two-wheelers, and three-wheelers.
India's automobile industry produced 28,64,612 vehicles in February 2026, up from 23,46,258 units in February 2025, according to data released by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) on March 13, 2026. Domestic sales rose to 23,01,355 units from 17,73,650 units in the same month last year, while exports grew to 6,08,284 units from 4,74,328 units.
On a cumulative basis for the April–February period of the 2025-26 fiscal year, total production stood at 3,03,51,351 units against 2,73,73,519 units in the corresponding period of 2024-25, a rise of roughly 11%. Cumulative domestic sales reached 2,45,51,735 units, compared to 2,24,50,972 units a year earlier. Exports for the same period grew from 48,10,153 to 60,03,994 units, an increase of approximately 25%.
Two-Wheelers Lead Overall Volume Growth
Two-wheelers, which account for the largest share of overall volumes, saw monthly production reach 23,11,594 units in February 2026, up from 18,58,462 units a year ago. Domestic sales in the segment climbed to 18,71,406 units from 13,84,605 units. Within two-wheelers, the motorcycle sub-segment led volumes with 14,75,389 units produced in February 2026, while scooters reached 7,89,841 units. TVS Motor Company, Hero MotoCorp, Honda Motorcycle and Scooter India, and Bajaj Auto were among the largest contributors by volume. Exports from the motorcycle sub-segment rose to 4,22,239 units in February 2026, from 3,45,722 units a year ago.
Utility Vehicles Drive Passenger Segment
Passenger vehicle production in February 2026 stood at 4,43,608 units against 4,04,193 units in February 2025. The utility vehicle sub-segment continued to represent the largest share within passenger vehicles, with 2,83,391 units produced in February 2026 compared to 2,45,508 units a year earlier. Maruti Suzuki India recorded the highest utility vehicle production among manufacturers at 1,02,834 units in February 2026, followed by Mahindra and Mahindra at 57,968 units and Hyundai Motor India at 34,961 units. In cumulative terms, utility vehicle domestic sales for April–February 2025-26 reached 26,89,571 units, up from 24,70,510 units in the year-ago period.
Tata Motors Posts Cumulative Decline
Tata Motors, for which only cumulative data is available in the SIAM report, recorded a decline in passenger vehicle volumes for the April–February 2025-26 period. Cumulative production across its passenger car, utility vehicle, and van segments totalled approximately 4,17,060 units, down from 4,51,413 units in the same period of 2024-25. Cumulative domestic sales fell to around 4,18,991 units from 4,46,017 units a year earlier, with the utility vehicle sub-segment accounting for the bulk of volumes at 3,18,043 units in 2025-26 against 3,33,148 units in 2024-25. Exports also declined sharply, with combined passenger vehicle exports for the period falling to 1,970 units from 7,716 units in 2024-25.
Three-Wheelers See Sharp Monthly Rise
Three-wheelers recorded monthly production of 1,08,154 units in February 2026, compared to 83,252 units in February 2025. The passenger carrier sub-segment accounted for the bulk of volumes at 92,514 units. Bajaj Auto led the segment with 56,500 units produced in February 2026, followed by TVS Motor Company at 20,168 units. Three-wheeler exports for the month rose to 38,766 units from 26,024 units, with cumulative exports for the fiscal year rising to 4,22,381 units from 2,78,006 units.
Quadricycles, a segment where Bajaj Auto is the sole manufacturer, saw production rise to 1,256 units in February 2026 from 351 units in February 2025, though domestic sales in the category remained negligible at zero units for the month.
