The India Energy Storage Alliance (IESA), an industry body focused on clean energy and e-mobility, has welcomed the Indian government’s newly introduced EV Manufacturing Guidelines under the Scheme for Promotion of Manufacturing of Electric Passenger Cars in India (SPMEPCI). The scheme is seen as a step toward expanding India's role in the global electric vehicle (EV) industry, particularly in the electric four-wheeler segment.
India has made steady progress in the electric mobility sector, emerging as one of the largest markets for electric three-wheelers and a key player in the two-wheeler EV space. This growth has been supported by government initiatives such as the PLI Auto, PLI ACC, FAME, and PM e-Drive schemes. According to a report by Fortune Business Insights, the Indian EV market is projected to reach USD 117.78 billion by 2032, growing at a compound annual rate of 22.4%.
The IESA noted that the focus of SPMEPCI on passenger electric cars complements broader goals for developing energy storage, green hydrogen, and renewable energy industries. The scheme is expected to support India’s ambitions to become a manufacturing hub for advanced technologies.
In line with these developments, IESA will host the 11th edition of India Energy Storage Week (IESW) from July 8–10, 2025, at the Yashobhoomi Convention and Expo Centre in New Delhi. The event will feature more than 150 partners and exhibitors, and over 1,000 participating companies from countries including Australia, Germany, France, the UK, Finland, Canada, the US, Israel, and South Korea.
Gurusharan Dhillon, Director of eMobility at Customized Energy Solutions, highlighted the importance of SPMEPCI’s structure, which links customs duty concessions with investment thresholds and domestic value addition. The inclusion of engineering R&D, software, testing, and charging infrastructure is seen as supportive of both technology transfer and the development of local capabilities.
IESA President Debmalaya Sen noted that while the policy is a positive step, its success will depend on sustained investment. He added that IESW 2025 is expected to facilitate global collaboration and innovation across the EV and energy storage sectors.
The alliance is also collaborating with state governments such as Gujarat, Odisha, Telangana, and Chhattisgarh to support ecosystem development. The focus will be on introducing practical innovations and solutions to strengthen India's clean mobility landscape.
